Wayne Rooney ended his five-month wait for a goal as he set Manchester United on their way to a comfortable Premier League win over West Ham.
Rooney's 33rd-minute penalty after Jonathan Spector had fouled Ryan Giggs will hardly enter his personal haul of fame. But it ends the talk of his scoring drought and should go some way to easing the 24-year-old back to top form after a slow start to the season.Second-half efforts from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, who took his tally to three in four games, sealed victory to keep United in touch with early pace-setters Chelsea. But for West Ham, the international break only provides further opportunity to worry.Without a point under Avram Grant's stewardship and unconvincing in Carling Cup triumph against lowly Oxford at Upton Park on Tuesday, the Hammers are now bottom of the table and facing a fight to preserve their top-flight status.Fabio Capello's whistle-stop tour of the north-west had taken him to Blackburn and Blackpool. It probably brought a black mood as well when he discovered Frank Lampard would miss the Euro 2012 double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland.Whether that news is going to trigger another attempt to lure Paul Scholes out of international retirement remains to be seen. Capello is not the only one to admire the 35-year-old who, by this season's standards, had one of his quieter games, even if his passing remains sublime.Indeed, Scott Parker, a man many felt was unlucky not to get the World Cup call last summer, possibly just edged their personal midfield duel. The problem for West Ham was that Parker was one of only two Hammers to impress.It could not be lost on Capello that Robert Green was the other. The two men will forever be united in ignominy for the debacle in South Africa, triggered as it was by the keeper's howler against the United States in Rustenburg that cost England their flying start.Yet there was a reason Capello trusted Green in the first place. And his excellent save to deny Nani proved it, even if Green required the additional help of his crossbar after the United winger had latched onto Dimitar Berbatov's lay-off and let fly from 20 yards.It was the best of a number of Nani chances, one of which should have provided United with some half-time daylight.Darren Fletcher was a similar distance out when he belted a right-footed drive that was destined for the top corner before Green pushed it away.Capello could only wistfully wonder what might have been. At least he did have the certain knowledge that his top striker no longer has to worry about how long it is since he last scored.Thirteen matches for club and country had passed since Rooney put United ahead in their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on March 30.That drought has been a popular debating point outside Old Trafford but Rooney kept any anxiety he might have been feeling well hidden as he strode up to take the penalty after Spector had been beaten by Giggs and then made a clumsy attempt to retrieve the situation.Rooney had the confidence to engage in a bit of kidology with Green before sending his international team-mate the wrong way, the celebrations somewhat subdued to say the least.Tossing away those points at Fulham will gnaw away at Ferguson for some time. Any fear of a repeat was dispelled within five minutes of the restart when Nani, one of the chief culprits on that occasion, profited from some excellent approach work from Scholes and Rooney, dumped Danny Gabbidon on his backside, then beat Green with ease.Given West Ham's almost complete inability to create anything of their own, it was effectively game over.Kieron Dyer wasted a decent chance when he fired into the side-netting but on this evidence it looks like being a bleak winter for the Londoners, especially if they fall victim to a late attempt to prise Parker away.United duly collected a third when Berbatov propelled a perfectly-executed airborne volley beyond Green after Nani had charged into the box and clipped a cross to the far post.

heo Walcott and Andrei Arshavin were on target as Arsenal battled to a 2-1 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park.

Walcott fired a stunning 19th minute opener as the Gunners worked hard for the points. He was sent scampering clear down the right flank by a fine ball from Robin van Persie before cutting inside and ramming a low shot past Paul Robinson.

Rovers made life hard for Arsene Wenger's men and Mame Diouf's 26th-minute equaliser was the least they deserved before Arshavin won it for the visitors in the 51st minute.

Wenger never relishes his trips to Ewood Park and the driving east Lancashire rain approaching kick-off time threatened to make his latest return an unwelcome one.

Rovers started positively, with Morten Gamst Pedersen's long throw causing Manuel Almunia to enter the action early to pluck the ball off the head of Christopher Samba.

The Gunners came close to an opener in the third minute when Abou Diaby's shot in a crowded box took a heavy deflection off Vince Grella and rather fortuitously struck goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

But Rovers set about peppering the Arsenal box with high balls and their tactic nearly paid off in the ninth minute when Ryan Nelsen's header was headed off the line by Cesc Fabregas.

In a promising opening spell Fabregas then split the Rovers defence with a through-ball towards Walcott, only for Samba to get in with a superb saving challenge.

El-Hadji Diouf failed to pick out namesake Mame in acres of space in a Rovers counter-attack then in the 15th minute Samba headed just over from another Pedersen corner.

Walcott's 19th minute strike was so powerful it required lengthy half-time repairs to the net - but when Arsenal threatened to go on and win at a canter it was the home side who struck back.

Samba set off a swift counter-attack which sent El-Hadji Diouf tearing down the left where he cut inside the hapless Laurent Koscielny and squared for Mame Diouf to sweep home.

Wenger was forced to make his first change in the 34th minute when Van Persie hobbled off with an apparent knee injury and was replaced by Marouane Chamakh.

Confidence continued to bleed back into Blackburn after the break and Pedersen was not too far away with an audacious long-range effort in the 50th minute.

But the Gunners went back ahead one minute later when a Fabregas effort in the box was blocked only to squirt clear to Arshavin, who poked past the advancing Robinson.

Nikola Kalinic blazed a left-foot shot over the bar before Allardyce made his first change introducing Dunn in a bid to add some creativity to his midfield.

However, as the game wore on, Wenger's men looked increasingly to be finding their rhythm and Nelsen and Samba were working overtime to repel Arshavin and Chamakh.

But it was Walcott who always looked the biggest threat and the young striker came close to a second on 75 minutes when he lofted a long-range effort inches over the bar.

Walcott thought he had knocked home the Gunners' third at the other end only to be deemed inches offside, then substitute Jack Wilshere missed a sitter in injury time.

Wenger: We had to overcome nerves
Arsene Wenger said his side had to shrug off an attack of nerves to win the match.
Wenger's dislike of the home side's qualities are well known and he insisted his side had approached the game with concerns after a bruising battle in the equivalent fixture last season.
Wenger said: "We had a good start but in my opinion we were too nervous dealing with the game of Blackburn. Who would not be unsettled by the kind of game Blackburn gave us today? Last year we had bad memories here and because we knew they would play the kind of game we don't like we had not enough confidence to deal with that.
"In the second half I felt we were calmer. We put the ball well on the ground and controlled it better and it was just a question of time. We had the right resilience and commitment."
And Wenger is adamant the way his side shrugged off those nerves to take the points sent a strong signal that they will not be found wanting in the title chase this season.
"If you have ambition in this league you have got to win at Blackburn," Wenger added. "If you fail to win at Blackburn - if you go to clubs like that and you don't win - your ambition will not be respected by the other teams so it was an important test for us. The players are committed and we had that little bit more experience today, even if on just one or two occasions we were a bit lucky."
Theo Walcott admitted he is benefiting from a relaxing summer after continuing his recent good form against Blackburn. The England hopeful was disappointed to miss the World Cup, but he impressed in front of Fabio Capello at Ewood Park.
"I've had a good think in the summer - I didn't blame anyone else for not being at the World Cup but didn't read too much into it because I had a nice break, I've not had one for a long time," he said after the game.
"Now I just want to get playing and show people what I can do. It's for me to push on and get on the goal sheet a bit more often.''
One negative aspect of the afternoon for Arsenal was the late ankle injury suffered by Robin van Persie, which Wenger believes will keep the Dutchman out for at least ten days.
Rovers boss Sam Allardyce bemoaned his side's failure to make the most of their chances which cost them after Mame Diouf's goal had brought them back into the match.
"I'm disappointed we didn't get something out of the game and from my point of view the first half was our opportunity to get our noses in front," Allardyce said. "Because we didn't take those opportunities we paid the price for that. At some stage Arsenal were going to take control of the game. You switch off for a split second and they are very, very good at punishing you.
"The pass and Walcott's finish were top quality and while we might try and criticise our defenders it's very difficult to stop that sort of quality of football."
But Allardyce is the first to admit his side need to turn performances into points after two successive league defeats to follow the opening-day win over Everton.
Allardyce added: "We played to our maximum as a team, which you've got to be reasonably satisfied with, but the game is about results and we've lost two games on the trot.
"It's put us in a difficult position in terms of points on the board. While our performances over the three games have been very good, we've only got three points and that's the danger."

Dynamo Kiev secured a 3-0 victory over Belgian side Gent on Tuesday in their Champions League third qualifying tie.

Andriy Yarmolenko put Kiev ahead on 19 minutes before former AC Milan star Andriy Shevchenko and substitute Roman Zozulya rounded off the scoring late on.

Unirea Urziceni played out a goalless draw with Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg in Romania.

Unirea saw Razvan Paduretu sent off in the 36th minute but Zenit boss Luciano Spalletti said: "This is a good result. We played a team that battled until the very last minute. For more than half the game we had the numerical advantage, but they defended very well, especially in and around the penalty area."

Elsewhere, The New Saints FC saw their European dreams suffer a blow as they suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Anderlecht.

Belgian champions Anderlecht got off to the perfect start when Sacha Kljestan gave them the lead in the seventh minute and things looked ominous for TNS as Jonathan Legear doubled the advantage 11 minutes later.

But TNS did not let their heads drop and they went close twice in the first half before Craig Jones, who had narrowly missed one of those opportunities, brought them back into the game seven minutes after the interval.

However, the Welsh outfit switched off and a free-kick was floated in towards the unmarked Matias Suarez, who headed in a third for Anderlecht. TNS now have a mountain to climb in the second leg on August 3.

Manchester United :Fixtures announced for 2010/11

United will kick off the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season against newly-promoted Newcastle at Old Trafford on the opening weekend.

If you believe in omens then it's good news - the Reds have twice started campaigns against the Magpies in the Premier League era, in 2000/01 (won 2-0), and 2008/09 (1-1), and on both occasions have gone on to win the title.

There are the usual tricky patches, of course, with back-to-back clashes against Arsenal and Chelsea twice - in December (11, 18) and in the run-in (30 April, 7 May).

The last ten fixtures of the campaign look like producing plenty of fireworks with away trips to Anfield, Upton Park, St James' Park, the Emirates Stadium and Ewood Park, with home games against Everton and Chelsea thrown in too. But, enough talk, here are the 2010/11 fixtures:

Goalkeeper Joe Hart has backed Ben Foster to successfully fill his role at Birmingham next season if he completes a £6 million switch from Manchester United to St Andrew's.

Foster, who who has admitted he will leave Old Trafford this summer, has been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs and Hart has backed his England rival to replace him when he rejoins Manchester City.

''I think Ben will do it easily [follow me]. He is a fantastic keeper,'' told the Daily Express. ''Ben has had some harsh criticism at Manchester United this season but, if he does turn out to be the Birmingham keeper next season, he will do a good job.''

Hart wanted to remain at Birmingham on loan - where he performed so well he made it into the Premier League's Team of the Season - but accepts the final say was with Manchester City.

''I just waited for my orders, and my orders were that I went back,'' he said. ''I am contracted to Manchester City so that's where I will be. I will admit, it's sad. But it was out of my hands.

''If I could have stayed at Birmingham, I would, but it wasn't down to me. I didn't really want to leave but I was told that I have to. It's just the way football is.''

Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino on Tuesday called up Borussia Dortmund striker and freshly nationalised Argentine Lucas Barrios as he unveiled his preliminary 2010 FIFA World Cup™ squad.

Barrios was named in a 30-man squad that will be cut to 23 at the end of the month, in time for the start of the finals on 11 June.

"Nobody can doubt the capabilities of Lucas Barrios," Martino, himself an Argentine, told a press conference. Barrios, whose mother is Paraguayan, has enjoyed a fine season with Dortmund, as has clubmate Nelson Haedo Valdez, who also made the 30 along with fellow strikers Oscar Cardozo of Benfica and Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz.

"I can imagine Paraguay causing some surprises in South Africa," said Barrios, who has scored 18 goals in the Bundesliga this season.

There was no place in the squad for Club America forward Salvador Cabanas, who was shot in the head in a Mexico City bar last January. Cabanas was Paraguay's top scorer in the qualifiers with six goals but despite his omission, officials last month said he was "95 percent recovered" from his injury.

Paraguay will face reigning champions Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in Group F of South Africa 2010.

Jose Mourinho's side will head to Catalunya for the return date thankful for goals from Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito, which helped to cancel out Pedro's opener at Giuseppe Meazza.

Barca, following their arduous journey to Italy by bus, showed no signs of sluggishness early on and saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic come within a whisker of getting a touch to a dangerous cross inside the opening 60 seconds.

The lively Milito was unable to pick out a team-mate as Inter threatened for the first time, while Seydou Keita fired well wide for the visitors as the game ebbed and flowed.

Samuel Eto'o was booked for kicking the ball away in frustration on 12 minutes, with the Cameroonian desperate to make his mark against former employers.

He came close to doing just that soon after, with his low drive parried by Victor Valdes but Milito was unable to force home the rebound.

The Argentine was made to pay for that miss on 19 minutes when Barca took the lead in the simplest of fashions.

Maxwell was afforded far too much time and space down the left and having ghosted in behind he was able to cut the ball back for Pedro to confidently slot home from 12 yards.

Lucio then diverted a free header well wide as Inter looked to respond, but Barca were looking the more comfortable in possession.

The Spaniards were leaving space in behind, though, and Milito went close again as he looked to curl the ball into the far corner from a tight angle.

He finally made a telling contribution on the half-hour mark as he collected a scuffed cross from Eto'o and freed Sneijder in space, who stroked home past Valdes to level the scores.

Ibrahimovic failed to meet a Dani Alves cross as the half came to a close, while Sneijder saw a well-struck free-kick cannon off the wall at the other end.

Inter, roused by Mourinho at the interval, started the second half much the brighter and Goran Pandev was unfortunate not to meet a Milito cross and bundle into an empty net.

It did, however, take the hosts just three minutes to edge themselves in front, with Maicon bombing forward from full-back to take a low cross from Milito in his stride and poke into the bottom corner.

Worryingly for Barca, they then saw talismanic skipper Carles Puyol pick up a caution which rules him out of the second leg.

The Spaniards did their best to raise the tempo, though, and Julio Cesar was forced to produce two smart reaction saves to deny Lionel Messi and Sergi Busquets in the space of as many minutes.

Struggle

Barca continued to struggle at the back as the game ticked past the hour mark and it came as no real surprise when they conceded a third on 61 minutes.

Pep Guardiola's side looked anything but reigning European champions as Eto'o floated over a cross from the right and Sneijder was left all alone yet again inside the box.

The Dutchman got his header all wrong, but was able to divert the ball in the direction of Milito who grabbed a deserved goal by nodding home from close range.

Barca's frustrations were now mounting, as they were unable to find a way through and were seeing their considerable array of attacking talent nullified by a resolute Inter side.

Maicon was stretchered from the field with 19 minutes remaining, after colliding with Messi's shoulder, and could be a doubt heading forward as Mourinho's men attempt to secure a domestic and European double.

Barca, seemingly oblivious to the fact that playing a high line was doing them no favours, were fortunate to see a couple of debatable offside decisions come down in their favour.

They continued to press, though, and only a last-ditch challenge from Walter Samuel denied Pedro, while Julio Cesar had to be at full stretch to keep out a dipping free-kick from Messi.

Seven minutes from time Dani Alves was booked for going down under a challenge from Sneijder inside the box, but the Brazilian seemed to have been caught and was understandably disappointed not to have been awarded a penalty.

Barca continued to push as they desperately tried to find a way back into the contest, with Gerard Pique seeing a shot hacked clear from in front of his own line by Lucio, but they were unable to find a second away goal and now have it all to do at Camp Nou if they are to become the first club to successfully defend the Champions League crown.

Althought start of the match didn’t show that Bayern have any chance because Manchester had great beggining of the game, they scored 3 goals (Gibbson and twice Nani), but at the end of first half Ivica Olic scored for Bayern and final result of first half 3:1. At the beggining of second half Rafael gets second yellow card after he started on Ribery and he must go off.
25 minutes Manchester was trying to save their net but in 74th minute great goal from Robben and that was end for Manchester United. Because of better goal difference Bayern goes into semifinals.

Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United are still the favourites to progress from their Champions League quarter-final despite the German side going into Wednesday night's second leg with a 2-1 lead.
Bayern came from behind to secure their advantage in Munich last Tuesday with late strikes from Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic after Wayne Rooney had put United ahead in the second minute.
The hosts looked good value for their victory in the Allianz Arena, but Van Gaal feels his side remain underdogs for the return match at Old Trafford.
Asked if he saw United as the favourites for the tie, the Dutchman said: "Yes. They have scored an away goal and they are a great team.
"They have a lot of experience playing big games at home and of course, they will have the support of the crowd.
"Our team is quite a young one in that it consists of young players, so that is a different situation.
"It is going to be our team versus theirs tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes.''
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to rule out naming Rooney on the bench, as his 34-goal striker looks to overcome the ankle injury he suffered in the final moments of United's first leg defeat seven days ago.
Ferguson had at first rejected the notion of an appearance in the return match, insisting Rooney had "no chance'' of being involved.
However, seconds later he said he didn't "think'' Rooney would be on the bench, before adding that he expected the 24-year-old to try to change his mind before he confirms his squad an hour before kick-off.
Any chance, however slight, of Rooney being involved will be seized upon by supporters desperate for some good news at the end of a dismal week which will see United's European aspirations brought to an end unless they can overturn a 2-1 deficit.
"He has no chance,'' Ferguson began. "We have made some good progress with the lad and the medical team have done fantastic.
"But I am not prepared to take a risk on a player who is not 100% fit. They are looking more at the Manchester City game, maybe Blackburn as a substitute. That is possible.
"But it is an ankle injury, the same as any other. He is no different to anyone else.''
Asked directly whether Rooney could be on the bench, Ferguson replied: "I don't think so, although he will maybe talk me into it. It is a difficult one.''
Van Gaal does not believe that his opposite number is trying to play mind games with him over the fitness of the England forward.
He said: "I don't think that will happen, but when we played Fiorentina we were faced with a different team than we thought and that does happen in the football business.
"(But) I don't think Ferguson will do that and I'd also like to say that we did win a game with Rooney (playing) - it's not as if we can't win when Wayne
Rooney is playing for Manchester United. We don't even need to win - a draw is fine.''

Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder grabbed the only goal of the game in the sixth minute as his low free-kick found its way through the CSKA wall and beyond goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Things got worse for the hosts when they had substitute Chidi Odiah sent off early in the second half and Inter were comfortably able to repel any pressure from their hosts and coast in the last four.

Overhauling their first-leg deficit always looked like being a tough task for the home side, given the way they were completely outplayed at the San Siro last week and the absence of key midfielder Yevgeny Aldonin and Milos Krasic through suspension.

But they made a bright start on the plastic pitch at Luzhniki Stadium and had an early effort on goal from Japan midfielder Keisuke Honda, who dragged a long-range effort wide.

But Inter landed an early body blow as they opened the scoring.

Sneijder drilled in a low free-kick that flew under the leaping wall and fooled keeper Akinfeev to end up in the back of the net.

That goal meant the hosts needed to score three goals to have any chance of going through and Inter went close to getting their second goal of the night as Goran Pandev had a sight of goal, but Akinfeev comfortably held his shot.

Conceding the goal prompted an early response from CSKA manager Leonid Slutsky as he hauled off defender Vasili Berezutsky after just 13 minutes to replace him with Odiah.

Honda then fired wide with two optimistic free-kick efforts from distance, but the hosts did go close to grabbing a goal back when Tomas Necid fired agonisingly wide after controlling Odiah's pass in the 24th minute.

The hosts then carved out another chance in the 34th minute as they broke quickly through Mark Gonzalez, but Alan Dzagoev made a mess of the finish, scuffing the ball infield as he drove into the box.

And that miss was almost instantly punished as Sneijder's excellent lofted ball played Diego Milito in, but the Argentinian forward could only hit his shot at Akinfeev.

Odiah then saw Julio Cesar tip his shot round the post at the other end, but the Italian champions looked comfortable soaking up any CSKA pressure.

And things got even worse for the Russian side when Odiah was dismissed just three minutes into the second half as his rash lunge for a loose ball saw him bring down Samuel Eto'o to earn himself a second yellow card.

But they continued to push forward in search of a goal and midfielder Gonzalez had two chances in the space of a minute.

The Chile international firstly smashed a half-volley that Julio Cesar did well to hang on to, before dragging another effort wide from the edge of the box.

With 20 minutes to go, Jose Mourinho's side were dominating possession, sweeping the ball around at will, and Sneijder and Dejan Stankovic both forced Akinfeev into action with powerful efforts, and the keeper did superbly to keep out Milito's effort with the Argentina international through on goal.

The game rather petered out from that point, although Eto'o just failed to add a second as he shot over the bar in the final minutes.

Messi quartet haunts Gunners
Lionel Messi lived up to his billing as the best player in the world with four goals to end Arsenal's Champions League dream in the Nou Camp.

Nicklas Bendtner had fired the Gunners into a shock lead on 18 minutes. However, Messi soon drew Barcelona level after capitalising on a mistake by Mikael Silvestre.

The Argentina forward then added a second from close range before dashing clear to make it 3-1 on the night just before the break, and grabbed a fourth with three minutes left to complete a comfortable 6-3 aggregate victory for the tournament holders.

Arsene Wenger's injury-hit squad - without the likes of captain Cesc Fabregas, Andrey Arshavin and Alex Song - must now regroup and focus on overhauling Chelsea and Manchester United in the Barclays Premier League title race.

Arsenal, playing in their white change kit, looked determined not to be overrun as they had during the opening exchanges of the first leg.

Barcelona, however, created an couple of chances when Xavi, captain for the night in the absence of suspended Carles Puyol, flicked the ball wide before Messi fired an angled shot just over the bar in a sign of things to come.

The English side, though, snatched a shock lead on their first real chance after 18 minutes.

Theo Walcott was put clear by Abou Diaby down the right, and he dashed into the Barca penalty area before squaring to Bendtner.

Victor Valdes made a good reaction save, but the in-form Denmark striker was quick to stab the rebound into the net and put the English team ahead in the tie for the first time.

The Gunners then wasted another chance of a breakaway, as Diaby pushed the ball left to Bendtner when Walcott was in space on the right.

It proved a costly error as Barcelona went up the other end to equalise on 21 minutes.

Silvestre, in the side ahead of veteran Sol Campbell who was not fully fit, failed to clear the ball on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area - and Messi needed no second invitation, lashing his shot into the top right corner.

Messi continued to torment Arsenal as he collected the ball on the right touchline before weaving into the box and drilling a shot into the side netting.

Arsenal were again punished by Messi for some poor defending as Barcelona went 2-1 ahead on 37 minutes.

Eric Abidal crossed the ball into the Arsenal box from the right, which was cut out by Thomas Vermaelen. However, his team-mates were slow to react as Pedro knocked the loose ball out to Messi - and he smashed it past Almunia.

The Argentina international completed a stunning hat-trick four minutes before the break when he latched onto a header from Abidal to race clear before dispatching a brilliant chip over the Arsenal keeper.

Messi nearly had another at the start of the second half when Pedro whipped a low ball across the Arsenal six-yard box from the right, which was just too far ahead of the Barcelona forward.

Arsenal had little choice but to go forwards, but that left the visitors exposed at the back.

The visitors nearly found away through when Diaby stabbed the ball to Bendtner just inside the Barcelona box, but the Denmark striker was hustle out of possession before he could shoot.

Then when left-back Gael Clichy broke and fed Bendtner, the home defence again got back in numbers to clear.

Diaby's low ball across the edge of the Barcelona box went all the way through to Tomas Rosicky, but the Czech snatched at his shot, which flew harmlessly wide.

Messi's clever quick free-kick released Pedro, but his angled chip was off target, before at the other end Bendtner's header crashed against the post - but the offside flag was up.

With 18 minutes left, Wenger sent on Eduardo for Rosicky, with Samir Nasri moving out to the left in a 4-4-2.

Clichy knocked Alves off the ball to charge forwards, but, with team-mates well placed, drilled an ambitious shot over from 20 yards.

Maxwell forced Almunia into a good save at his near post after cutting into the right side of the Arsenal penalty area.

Messi then completed a fine night's work with another well-taken goal three minutes from time as the holders marched on towards a mouth-watering semi-final clash against Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan.

Rooney suffered minor ligament damage to his right ankle in the first leg against Bayern in the Allianz Arena, and initial reports said he could be out for up to a month.
But speculation in the press had suggested that Sir Alex would risk him against Bayern in a bid to reach the Champions League semi-finals. On Monday it was reported that the 34-goal striker had a 40% chance of featuring in the return leg.
Sir Alex has now said he is not prepared to risk the long-term fitness of the England international as United look to overturn a 2-1 deficit.
''He's got no chance,'' he said. ''We've made some good progress with the lad, the medical team have done fantastic, but I'm not prepared to take a risk on a player who is not 100% fit.
''The boy is making good progress. The medical team have done a fantastic job but it is an ankle injury the same as any other ankle injury. You can't take a risk with a player who is not 100%.
''I don't think he will be on the bench although he might talk me into it, it is a difficult one.''
The one piece of good news for Ferguson is the likely availability of John O'Shea, who has not played since suffering complications in his recovery from a dead leg sustained in the Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat to France in November.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has warned his players to forget last week's impressive performance against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium and focus on the job in hand when the two sides meet again at the Nou Camp tomorrow night.
Barca played Arsenal off the park with some breathtaking football in the first half and went 2-0 up early in the second period.
The Catalans were eventually pegged back, though, and had to settle for a 2-2 draw as Arsenal rallied late on.
It was perhaps an unfair reflection of the play, which Barca dominated, creating 22 chances overall and an incredible 11 in the first 15 minutes.
But Guardiola says a repeat of that performance cannot be expected tomorrow.
"What we did the other day has nothing to do with tomorrow's match,'' Guardiola said.
"Those things only happen every now and again and it's in the past. We have to forget about it and focus on doing our job tomorrow.
"We performed well last week but now we have to go again and if we don't play well, if we do not produce the necessary level of performance, it will be tough and we might not get to the semi-finals.''
Guardiola is missing a host of first-team players with defensive pair Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique suspended.

"It's bad news because he is a very important player for us, so we hope he recovers as soon as possible,'' Guardiola said.
The Barca coach will also make a late decision on Andres Iniesta, who was out with a thigh problem but is now back in full training.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger called on his battle-weary side to show no fear as they aim to upset the odds.
The Gunners' preparations for the second leg were today hit by the news Cameroon international Alex Song - who had been in line to drop back into defence as veteran Sol Campbell struggles to regain full match fitness - was out with a knee injury.
Arsenal were already missing captain Cesc Fabregas, who suffered a cracked bone in his leg when winning the late penalty which levelled the tie at 2-2, as well as centre-back William Gallas and Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin.
However, Wenger maintains his team - with England forward Theo Walcott in contention to start having made a major impact from the bench in the first leg - have what it takes to pull off another famous away victory.
"We have won away everywhere in Europe. Barcelona is a place where we have not done it, so there is no better opportunity than tomorrow night,'' Wenger declared.
"I am confident despite the injuries we have that we can do it.

"We have learned that it is important we start will full power, without any inhibition, which we showed in the first 20 minutes at the Emirates,'' he said.
"How we manage to do that will certainly have a big influence on the game and on the result tomorrow.
"We have to try to be very disciplined, but not to hide when we have the ball.''
With so many of his key men missing, the last thing Wenger needed was another injury problem.
The prognosis on Song, however, does not look promising.
"It was a bad surprise this morning, because he had a scan yesterday afternoon on his knee and it is an inflamed cartilage,'' the Arsenal boss revealed.
"We have to wait how the evolution will be, but he is completely out of the squad for tomorrow's game.''
Song had been pencilled in to drop back into defence, as he had done following Gallas' calf injury relapse in the first leg, given Campbell can often need more recovery time between games.
Wenger will, though, leave a decision on the 35-year-old's involvement as late as possible, with fellow veteran Mikael Silvestre, 32, also part of the 18-man squad which left Luton this afternoon.
"That is a decision I have to make, consulting with Sol tomorrow to see how he feels,'' Wenger said.

Wayne Rooney limped off with what looked like an ankle injury as Manchester United suffered an agonising injury-time Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

Rooney was lying injured in his own half as Bayern broke forward on their fateful attack.
Ivica Olic applied the cool finish for Bayern's winner after robbing Patrice Evra of possession in the box, and at that moment United medical staff instantly ran to Rooney, who appeared to land awkwardly on his right ankle after trying to avoid having his left foot trodden on by Mario Gomez.
Rooney had earlier scored his 34th goal of the season before deflecting Franck Ribery's free-kick past Edwin van der Sar 13 minutes from time.
The initial fear was that it was another of those dreaded metatarsal injuries and while that did not seem to be the problem on closer inspection, any enforced lay-off at this stage of the season will be bad news in particular for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The night could scarcely have started better for the England striker.
Even by Rooney's remarkable standards, meeting his boss' demand for an away goal after just 64 seconds was a staggering achievement.
Much of the period that did elapse was for treatment to Nani, who had been so needlessly chopped down near the corner flag by Bayern's man-in-the-mask Martin Demichelis.
It turned out to be the start of a complete disaster for the Argentina defender, who slipped as he attempted to reach the ball when Nani eventually took the free-kick and it looped skywards off Mark van Bommel.
All on his own, four yards out, Rooney had the simplest of tasks to tap home and leave the hosts, already without Arjen Robben, in a state of complete shock.
By the time they revived themselves, the hosts could have been out of the contest completely as Paul Scholes, surprisingly preferred to Antonio Valencia, put the ball over.
United knew the fightback would come though. German teams are not noted for giving up on their own patch, especially not a club with a tradition as proud as Bayern's.
It was probably just as well for the Red Devils that Robben was missing for with a bit of additional guile, Bayern would surely have been on terms at the break.
The first came through a moment of brilliance from the mercurial Franck Ribery, who chipped beyond the United defence, straight to Hamit Altintop.
A first-time finish was demanded. Unfathomably, with only Edwin van der Sar to beat, the Turkey star tried to control and succeeded only in rolling the ball through to the veteran Dutchman.
Ribery was the architect of Bayern's second opening too as Van der Sar punched away his angled drive.
Altintop failed to make a decent connection with his shot, but the direction caught Rio Ferdinand out as it rolled through to Ivica Olic.
To his team-mates' disbelief, Olic failed to make any contact and the ball trundled wide.
Although he had not given that impression before half-time, Altintop can clearly play, judging by the twinkle-toed way he danced through the United defence in a one-sided start to the second period.
Van der Sar was intent on not being beaten though.
He may have another year's contract that will keep him at Old Trafford beyond his 40th birthday, but the veteran Dutchman knows opportunities to appear on the greatest stage are reducing and his save to deny Altintop suggested he wants to reach a third final in a row in Madrid on May 22.
There was nothing Van der Sar could do to prevent Bayern's equaliser 14 minutes from time though.
Gary Neville will have plenty of time to reflect on the handball near the edge of his area that cost him a booking and offered Ribery the chance to shoot.
After causing so much damage to opposition defences this season, maybe it was a collective defenders' retribution that ensured Rooney was the man who Ribery struck to send the ball flying into the corner.
It was the least Bayern deserved.
But worse, possibly much worse, was to follow after Nemanja Vidic had thundered his header against the crossbar.
Gomez tried to burst forward after his collision with Rooney, and although Vidic's challenge steered the ball towards Evra, the Frenchman was caught unawares by Croatia striker Olic who steadied himself before steering the ball past Van der Sar.

Louis van Gaal insists Manchester United have more reason to be afraid of Bayern Munich than the German giants do of their 1999 Champions League final conquerors.
In the build-up to tomorrow's quarter-final first leg at the Allianz Arena, Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge suggested his team were scared about trying to keep Wayne Rooney quiet.
As the man who must overcome a team who hail from the "level one'' station he can only dream of eight months into his work, Van Gaal could have done without the suggestion of an inferiority complex.
And the Dutchman was quick to turn it on its head, even though he accepts Rooney, who has travelled after shrugging off the foot problem which kept him out of Saturday's win at Bolton, has a special talent that will not be easily quelled.
"I never have fear and my players don't have any fear either,'' said Bayern coach Van Gaal.
"We value Rooney's quality. He is a super footballer.
"When he was younger, I often wondered whether he had the vision in his game.
"He has developed that now and is very hard to mark out of the game.
"But we can manage because we also have quality. Ferguson and his players should be scared of that.''
Bayern are sweating on the fitness of former Chelsea star Arjen Robben, who aggravated a groin injury in Saturday's defeat by Stuttgart.
It is the kind of muscular problem that has plagued Robben throughout his career and he has never given the impression of being too keen to try to play through.
Van Gaal will give his fellow countryman every chance, knowing he is capable of the individual brilliance that helped dispose of Fiorentina in the last round.
But he has vowed no chances will be taken.
"We need a player like Robben against Manchester United but if he is not 100%, he doesn't play,'' Van Gaal said.
"You have always got to be a bit careful with a player who dribbles at such high intensity. He is not injured but his muscle is tired.''
Robben's wing twin Franck Ribery is more likely to be involved despite a nagging ankle injury.

There is certainly a wariness inside the United camp merely because of the history they are facing.
"I respect Bayern Munich,'' said Ferguson.
"I have great admiration for them as a club. That is what we are playing. We are playing history. A team with history has a certain pride and we have to remember that.''
United are boosted by the presence not only of Rooney but also of Rio Ferdinand in the travelling party. The centre-back has shrugged off a groin problem that kept him out of the Bolton game.

Wayne Rooney produced another match-winning performance for Manchester United as he took his tally for the season to 27 by bagging a double against West Ham.

Michael Owen scored for the first time since that hat-trick at Wolfsburg in December as the Red Devils closed to within a point of Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea. But Owen's late effort was a mere footnote compared to Rooney's contribution.

The 24-year-old has been set a conservative target of 30 by Sir Alex Ferguson. At this rate he will eclipse the 42 that helped turn Cristiano Ronaldo into the world's best player two years ago.

''My biggest concern was how we were going to maintain the scoring level,'' reflected Ferguson in his programme notes as he considered Ronaldo's summer exit for Real Madrid. ''There you have the answer,'' he added. Not that anyone needed it.

Rooney has a maximum of 17 games to overhaul Ronaldo's 2007-08 tally. On present form it is well within range.

A week ago, United were engaged in that amazing Champions League encounter with AC Milan in the San Siro, which could have been disastrous but turned out to be one of the great European results.

Rooney grabbed all the headlines, just as he has been doing for most of the season as he has dragged United along in pursuit of glory.

Where the Red Devils would be without the striker does not bear thinking about. Little wonder Ferguson once again opted to stick with him against supposedly lesser opposition on home soil when probably, he could do with a rest, however minimal.

The wisdom of the selection was proved just before half-time when Rooney planted his diving header into the corner of Robert Green's goal.

Prior to that, Darron Gibson had been the hosts' main threat, repeatedly taking aim from distance, without really threatening to beat Green's blockade.

It would be churlish to exclude Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia from praise given the Bulgarian's excellent crossfield pass and an even better volleyed cross to the far post from the South American. But Rooney was the man who had shifted into space, Rooney who had to finish. There was never any prospect of him failing.

Unlike Milan, West Ham did not reach half-time unable to believe they were not ahead. Gianfranco Zola might have pondered how fortunate Ben Foster had been, though.

Handed his first start since November, but surely too late to earn a call-up for England's friendly against Egypt next week, Foster was in direct opposition to another member of Fabio Capello's expanded squad.

But he would have been hanging his head in shame if he had pushed a Guillermo Franco shot that looped skywards off Gary Neville into his own net rather than directly onto his line.

The loss of Anderson to a knee injury sustained when no one was near him does not auger well for a positive conclusion to the Brazilian's disappointing season.

Injury is the one thing Capello cannot countenance for Rooney. There would be no point in the Italian trying to put on a brave face. England would instantly be reduced from contenders to also-rans.

In a very similar manner to his opener, Rooney found himself in splendid isolation when Berbatov released Valencia with another excellent pass in the build up to the second.

Once again the cross was inviting. Once again Rooney sent it past Green. For a player of his class, his finishes had been routine.

Less so was the strength required to bundle Green off the ball and the eye for an opportunity as Rooney fired goalwards from the touchline. Had Julien Faubert not been stood on the line, it would have been an incredible finish to a hat-trick.

Instead, Owen grabbed the third after an inspired through ball from Paul Scholes. It was Owen's eighth of the season, only one short of Berbatov's tally. A long way behind Rooney though. And the gap is going to get wider yet.

When VfB Stuttgart fans saw that they had been drawn with continental giants Barcelona in the last 16 of this season's Champions League extravaganza, they must have felt like running up a white flag.
It is, after all, a clash of David versus Goliath proportions, a game that pits, in Barcelona, a team that continues to conquer all, against a Stuttgart side struggling in the Bundesliga and who only just made it out of a particularly weak qualifying group.

Nevertheless, having already been given little or no chance of progressing past Pep Guardiola's exceptional side, the Stuttgart faithful will be buoyed by last weekend's 2-1 away win at Nuremberg, a victory that means they have won five in a row domestically and remain unbeaten since Christian Gross took over in December.
Stuttgart's fine current form is in stark contrast to their somewhat stop start qualifying campaign.
A home draw with Scotland's Rangers and a demoralizing defeat in their own backyard to eventual group winners Sevilla were definite lows, whilst a spirited draw in Valencia and a convincing 3-1 home win against Romanian upstarts Unirea Urziceni, were the highlights.
Veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who excelled against Unirea, is, according to Gross, back to his very best, whilst the exceptionally talented Sami Khedira and former Arsenal star Aleksandr Hleb will raid forward and look to supply Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak who will certainly test Barcelona's backline over the two legs.
Despite losing 2-1 at home against Group F minnows Rubin Kazan, Barcelona, the current Champions League holders, qualified for this season's knockout phase with relative ease.
A battling 0-0 draw away at Inter Milan, coupled with a 2-0 home win against Jose Mourinho's charges underlined their group dominance, although injuries to key players have cast a shadow over February 23 trip to Stuttgart.
Already doubtful for the VfB Stadium encounter are Eric Abidal, Dani Alves and now Dmytro Chygrynskiy, a defensive headache that will not help Guardiola's mood ahead of the test in Germany.
Whilst Barca's problems at the back may be a ray of light for Stuttgart, the Catalan team's prowess going forward - take a bow Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry and young upstart Pedro, is sure to be worrying Gross.
Barca, who last season became the first team to win six trophies in one campaign, are once again riding high in La Liga.
Thanks to their sublime football - a flowing, skill-laden version of the beautiful game that left Manchester United wondering what had hit them in last season's Champions League final - many Spanish analysts are already declaring that the title is theirs to lose.
Whilst that may be so, Guardiola and his men would do well not to underestimate Stuttgart, with the German faithful sure to provide a hostile reception, this tie may not as much of a walkover as many are predicting.

However, Gold has received political support for his idea from Sir Robin Wales, the Mayor of Newham.
The Newham Mayor said he "would like West Ham to be in there", adding it was a "sensible solution".
The Newham borough is home to the Premier League team's Upton Park ground as well as the Olympic Stadium, which will host two-thirds of the events at the 2012 Games.
Wales, who sits on the boards of the Olympic Park Legacy Company and Games organiser Locog, said: "My view is to develop the stadium as a football stadium in legacy and use the money from West Ham and the developers to then build a proper athletics offer in London.
He believes there could be "a problem with the legacy" if the club did not move into the £450m stadium.
Gold maintains that a deal for West Ham to relocate there remains a "serious possibility".
"I'm sensing an easing of the stance that it should be a legacy to athletics," the West Ham co-owner told BBC Radio 5 live.
"We have to be more pragmatic. Do we want to have a stadium like we have at Crystal Palace which just deteriorated and rotted away because it wasn't sustainable?
"We believe there is a serious possibility that we could strike a deal that would take West Ham to the Olympic Stadium.
"If that can be done, we would have a super stadium that could take the club to the next level."
Gold and co-owner David Sullivan took over the cash-strapped club last month and immediately confirmed their interest in relocating to the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium in Stratford as they try to improve the club finances.
Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell has insisted that keeping the stadium as a grand prix athletics venue was one of the reasons that London bid for the Games, and keeping the running track at the stadium to leave a legacy to athletics in East London remained a strong commitment.
The Olympic Park Legacy Company is to shortly invite bids from businesses that want to apply for a commercial stake in the stadium.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic could be back to bolster Manchester United's flagging Premier League title challenge against West Ham tomorrow.

Sir Alex Ferguson has not had his first-choice central defensive partnership available since October but with Ferdinand now clear of suspension and Vidic over the nerve problem that has prevented him making an appearance in 2010, both are expected to start against the Hammers.

With the Carling Cup final just five days away, Ferguson might have been tempted to rest Wayne Rooney but that hardly seems likely in the wake of Saturday's defeat at Everton that left the Red Devils four points adrift of Chelsea. Nani is still suspended.

As someone who has finished a champion in each of his three full seasons since his £18.6million move to Old Trafford from Tottenham, midfielder Michael Carrick is reluctant to let than run come to an end.

However, he knows extending it means inflicting some pain on West Ham, the club where he started his career and who he clearly retains a lot of affection for.

"West Ham gave me my chance,'' he said. "They took me away from home, taught me a lot of things and guided me through.

"They gave me a chance in the first team, so I have a lot to thank them for.

"I still have a lot of friends there who I like to see when I go back.

"But, obviously, when we kick off it is business as usual and I am desperate to get the win.''

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has doubts over striker Benni McCarthy.

The South African star, who signed for the Hammers on the last day of the January transfer window, has been out with a knee problem since the 2-1 defeat at Burnley on February 10.

England midfielder Kieron Dyer and defender Danny Gabbidon (both hamstring) are not yet fully fit.

Herita Ilunga is set to miss out with a tendon injury while Luis Boa Morte (knee), Calum Davenport (leg) and Zavon Hines (knee) are all long-term absentees.

Puyol wary of Stuttgart threat

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol admits his side could be in for a bad night if they underestimate the threat posed by in-form Stuttgart in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Barca make the trip to Germany having bounced back from their first league defeat of the season eight days ago against Atletico Madrid by thumping Racing Santander 4-0 on Saturday night.

That was the Catalan giants` sixth victory in seven league games, but they will now come up against a Stuttgart who are in just as good form.

Stuttgart may still be struggling down in ninth place in the Bundesliga but they too have won six of their last seven and at the weekend thrashed Cologne 5-1 away from home with Cacau netting four of his side's goals.

When the draw was made back in December Stuttgart were in the midst of a 10-match winless run in all competitions, but it is a different story now and a wary Puyol said: "They're playing better now and they are a dangerous team.

"If we don't go there focused, we could really have a bad time,'' added Puyol, who scored one of his side`s goals as they beat Stuttgart 2-0 away during the group stages of the 2007/08 Champions League.

Barca have struggled badly with absentees recently and the Champions League holders will again be without Seydou Keita and Eric Abidal.

Key duo Xavi and Dani Alves have at least made the trip to Germany, but neither has yet been given the all-clear to return to action following injuries.

Full-back Alves has been absent for a month due to a calf problem while Xavi picked up a thigh injury during the defeat to Atletico that had been expected to keep the Spain international out for around 15 days.

Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was a late withdrawal ahead of Saturday`s win over Racing with an ankle problem, has also been included in a 20-man travelling squad in the hope he will be fit to feature.

Stuttgart coach Christian Gross is likely to be without left-back Arthur Boka for both meetings against Barca after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in training prior to the Cologne match that could keep him sidelined for a month.

That was one of the few negatives on what was a memorable weekend for the Bundesliga outfit, which saw striker Cacau make a stunning return from his four-week injury lay-off.

"I was really looking forward to this game after my long break,'' said Cacau. "And the way the game went makes it particularly beautiful.''

Looking ahead to the clash, the Brazilian-born Germany international told Barca TV: "We've got nothing to lose. Barca are favourites and we maybe have a 20 or 30% chance of getting through, but we will be trying to make the most of our opportunities.

Olympiacos striker Jaouad Zairi is adamant Bordeaux will put their recent struggles behind them and pose a significant threat in their Champions League encounter.

Les Girondins have not looked at their formidable best in recent games although they still lead the way in the Ligue 1 table.

And they can at least point to wins in their last two games as evidence they are back on track.

Neither the defeat of St Etienne, nor the win against a Lorient side down to 10 men for three-quarters of the game were convincing, however, results which came after losses to Monaco and Rennes.

The wobble has led to speculation in France that Laurent Blanc's men's air of invincibility has evaporated but Zairi is not convinced ahead of the first leg of their last-16 tie.

The former Sochaux and Nantes forward told RMC: "Bordeaux have no reason to worry. They have a quality squad with a great coach.

Nemanja Vidic is back in contention as Manchester United look to reclaim the Premier League's top spot by beating crisis-club Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

Vidic has been missing since suffering pain from a nerve in his leg prior to the encounter with Wigan at the end of December but has trained this week and could be involved - if not this weekend, then the crucial trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Rio Ferdinand serves the second match of a four-game ban although United have appealed against the additional match imposed for a "frivolous'' appeal against the first one.

Edwin Van der Sar believes Manchester United have the awareness that separates them from the rest.

Chelsea fluff lines at Hull

Didier Drogba celebrated his return from African Nations Cup duty by notching his 20th goal of the season to spare Chelsea's blushes in a 1-1 draw against lowly Hull.
All eyes were, inevitably, on John Terry in his second match since allegations over his private life were made public but it was Hull centre-back Steven Mouyokolo who grabbed the limelight by heading the Barclays Premier League strugglers in front.
Drogba, in his first Blues match for a month, snared a point for the table-toppers when he drilled home a contested free-kick just before the interval.
Hull started confidently, winning corners on the left and right inside two minutes.
Chelsea repelled them safely but Stephen Hunt's delivery looked dangerous and the home side were assured in the opening minutes.
Terry started solidly and did not appear outwardly affected by the expected round of boos and chants.
In the ninth minute Frank Lampard had the first chance of the match, capping a nice passing move with a swerving shot at goal. Boaz Myhill could only parry it to Nicolas Anelka 10 yards out but the Frenchman fluffed his finish.
Drogba was also off-target as he blazed wide soon after.
Hunt was looking dangerous down the left for Hull and Branislav Ivanovic appeared unsettled by the bustling Irishman.
Chelsea should have taken the lead 25 minutes in when Deco's crossfield ball set Ivanovic free on the right and he arrowed a cross into the Hull area. Michael Ballack timed his run perfectly but headed tamely and straight at Myhill from close range.
Hull continued to give as good as they got, though, with crosses from Hunt and George Boateng both causing problems.
It was, then, no great surprise when Mouyokolo outjumped a number of Chelsea defenders, Terry included, to head home Hunt's 29th-minute corner.
Anelka and Deco failed to beat Myhill with low drives as Chelsea fought back and Anthony Gardner made good ground to dispossess Drogba as he shaped to shoot.
With three minutes to go before the break the Ivorian striker lashed home the equaliser with a disputed free-kick from just outside the penalty area.
Gardner missed a glorious chance to restore the lead before the break when he headed Tom Cairney's flighted free-kick over from just a couple of yards.
Terry was booked a minute after the restart for an ungainly leap with Jozy Altidore and it was almost a costly foul.
Hunt again sent in the cross and Altidore was left free in the box six yards out. He stooped to head goalwards but it looped up softly off the back of his head.
Ivanovic forced another parried save from Myhill in the 50th minute but when the loose ball was cut back across goal Lampard skied his shot.
Hull were furious when Mark Clattenburg deemed Ricardo Carvalho's risky challenge on Altidore legal, but there was more to worry about at the other end as the hour-mark approached. First Drogba and then Terry drew Myhill into action with strong headed efforts as the hosts failed to clear a corner.
Five minutes later Amr Zaki came off the bench for his second Tigers appearance and immediately had some joy as he got the better of Yury Zhirkov to reach the byline.
Ancelotti introduced a fresh playmaker of his own with 19 minutes to play, Joe Cole replacing the off-colour Ballack.
Chelsea's defending at set-pieces continued to falter as Hunt and Mouyokolo combined again with a near-post corner, though this time the defender headed wide.
Drogba was also off-target in the 77th minute, heading over Ivanovic's curling delivery as last man Myhill charged off his line.

Drogba was booked late on for a frustrated flick at Paul McShane and Myhill ensured the Tigers held on to a valuable point as he stretched to save Daniel Sturridge's late strike.

Ferdinand risks four-game ban by appealing charge

Rio Ferdinand has appealed against the violent conduct charge levelled against him for his clash with Hull's Craig Fagan and will therefore be allowed to play against Manchester City in the Carling Cup. However, he risks increasing any ban if he is found guilty.

Ferdinand has decided to plead 'not guilty' to the Football Association's charge for swinging his arm at Fagan during the 4-0 win on Saturday, despite being advised not to by the club's disciplinary experts.
The decision (which had to be made by 6pm on Wednesday) means he will be able to face Roberto Mancini's City side at Old Trafford in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, but risks being handed a four-match ban later this week if the charge is proven.
The FA's disciplinary committee will review the case within 24 hours and, if they find Ferdinand guilty, are able to increase a possible three-match suspension by an extra game because of his ''frivolous'' appeal - as was the case with Sunderland's Michael Turner last month.
This would result in Ferdinand missing league games against Arsenal, Portsmouth and Aston Villa, while the fourth match of any ban would take in United's away trip to Everton next month.
A Regulatory Commission will hear the charge on Thursday 28 January.

After a week full of trash talk and controversy, the Carling Cup semifinal second leg could not come fast enough. Manchester United hosts city rivals Manchester City Wednesday evening at Old Trafford. There are certainly not a lack of storylines for this one. The Gary Neville – Carlos Tevez middle finger saga, Tevez sticking it to his old club, Robinho about to be loaned. The list goes on… Just make sure you tune into this one folks. I have a feeling you won’t want to miss it.

Manchester City:

The Citizens, under new boss Roberto Mancini, have been quite exceptional winning all their matches other than their recent 2-0 falter to Everton last weekend at Goodison Park. They probably owe a majority, if not all, of the credit that is due to former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez who has been extraordinary in picking up the goal scoring slack as Emmanuel Adebayor attended to his Togolese National Team duties for the African Nations Cup. Tevez truly seems to show up when City needs him most and as he makes his return to Old Trafford, don’t expect to see anything different. On the flip side of things, star Brazilian forward Robinho has been in the news a lot recently amidst his lack of form and especially now being linked with a loan deal to Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo or his former clubs Santos. He did however score in City’s recent 4-2 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe United so hopefully that will get the world class talent back on track. Mancini says Robinho will be available although it is uncertain whether or not he will see the pitch. In other news, Adebayor and Kolo Toure are scheduled to return from the African Nations Cup. Toure is expected to play while Adebayor will likely be on the bench as he is not yet fit from being away on compassionate leave after the attack on the Togolese Team bus in Africa. Also expected to be unavailable from injuries are Wayne Bridge, Michael Johnson, and Joleon Lescott (all knee injuries), as well as Roque Santa Cruz and newly acquired Patrice Vieira (both calf).

Manchester United:

Manchester United made big strides this week by recapturing the top spot in the Premiership table (or at least for the time being) after their 4-0 defeat of Hull City. Perhaps it’s better described as “Rooney’s 4-0 defeat” seeing as the Wonderboy scored all 4 goals but who’s counting? Anyways, they seem to be hitting stride just as they always do this time of year and they’ll get a chance to show it as they gun for their first trophy of the decade. The big stir in the past 7 days has of course been about Gary Neville’s obscene gesture that was directed towards Carlos Tevez after the Argentine scored and proceeded to give the United bench the “Shhhhh” signal. I don’t know about you guys but I’m pretty sure Gary Neville is like 60 years old and I’m definitely sure he was sitting on the bench so I’m not sure what the hell he’s running his mouth for but whatever. At least it gives us something fun to talk about. It has certainly added to the storyline and given Sir Alex an extra barrage of questions to answer so for that Gary, I thank you. The good news for Fergie, however, is that he is heading into Wednesday’s showdown with what appears to be a full and healthy lineup. The only question mark is with Rio Ferdinand who featured for his first time in three months against Hull City only to receive a red card and a violent charge from the FA after clashing with Craig Fagan. Other than, full green light for the Red Devils.

They are up 2-1 heading into the 2-legged match so a 1-0 defeat would be the end of them on away goals. With all this buzz surrounding the match, I just think United at home will be too much for the Citizens to handle. But with Tevez the Bulldog playing like he is, anything is possible.

Rio Ferdinand will make his long-awaited return for Manchester United against Hull on Saturday.

The England defender has been missing for three months with a back complaint but is expected to partner Jonny Evans in central defence as United look for the victory that would allow them to claim top spot in the Premier League.

Dimitar Berbatov has shaken off a dead leg and should also return after missing Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat at Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson has called on his side to hit the accelerator as the Premier League title campaign enters another crucial phase.

With their interest in the FA Cup over at an early stage, United have the chance to jump above Chelsea and current leaders Arsenal by claiming top spot for the first time since October.

In the last week Chelsea have put seven goals past Sunderland and Arsenal roared back against Bolton in midweek to seize pole position on goal difference barely a month after being completely written off.

So, with the London duo flexing their muscles and other pretenders failing to beat opposition from much lower in the table, the title race is taking shape.

And Ferguson does not want to be left behind.

"You have to win your games now,'' he said. "Top of the league is the best place to be. Our game is the only one in Premier League so it is an opportunity for us.''

Hull City's new loan signing Amr Zaki will not be available due to a lack of match fitness.

However defender Kamil Zayatte is expected to be despite an ankle injury. The problem requires minor surgery but that is likely to take place next month.

Jimmy Bullard (knee) is likely to be out until the end of the month.

City manager Phil Brown believes his players are capable of staging another surprise in Manchester to lift the Tigers out of the bottom three.

The match at Old Trafford is the only Premier League game of a weekend dominated by the FA Cup, and having already drawn at Manchester City this season Brown insists the same can be done against United.

Visits to Manchester have dominated Hull's continuing rollercoaster ride in the Premier League - a thrilling 4-3 defeat at Old Trafford last season was followed by the infamous half-time team talk on the pitch at Manchester City.

This season Jimmy Bullard inspired a 1-1 draw at Eastlands and though he will be missing against Sir Alex Ferguson's side, Brown says his players - brimming with confidence after a goalless draw at Tottenham - can capitalise on a United side who are not in the best form with just one win in their last four games.

Brown said: "We have to take the same togetherness, the same spirit and the same mentality that we had at White Hart Lane last week.

"If we bring that to the table, I think there is a great opportunity for a result to follow.

"There's references from last season for us having taken United so close at Old Trafford and scoring three goals there.

"But I'm not sure there's any such thing as a good time to play Manchester United.''

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's agent has confirmed to Soccernet the AC Milan striker is attracting interest from the Premier League and that a deal could be possible in what remains of the transfer window.

Huntelaar joined the Rossoneri from Real Madrid in the summer but has been unable to secure a regular place in Leonardo's starting XI with the impressive form of Marco Borriello restricting the Dutchman to five Serie A starts in six months.
With the World Cup finals firmly on the horizon, Huntelaar recently conceded he is "thinking" of leaving San Siro, possibly in a loan move, in order to prove to national coach Bert van Marwijk he is worthy of a place in the 23-man squad that will travel to South Africa.
Bringing his dilemma into the public domain immediately led to suggestions that Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, amongst others, were hoping to recruit the player. While AC Milan are keen to retain Huntelaar if possible, his agent, Arnold Oosterveer, believes a move to England remains a possibility.
"There are some clubs in England interested in the player, that is correct," Oosterveer told Soccernet. "But out of respect for the clubs I cannot tell you [which ones they are].
"It depends. In football everything is possible and in the last week a lot of things can happen. He wants to play more than he plays now and if that is in England or Germany or Spain or Italy, that is for him.
"There is no problem at the moment and I hope Milan want to cooperate for the next four months and play him, because he needs to play more. It depends if Milan want to cooperate with the player. For now they want him to stay in Milan."
Huntelaar rose to prominence thanks to a prolific spell with Heereveen but truly caught the attention of Europe's biggest clubs when scoring a remarkable 76 goals in in 92 Eredivisie games for Ajax. He joined Real Madrid in January 2009 but made just 20 appearances before the new regime of Florentino Perez made him a high-profile victim of an ambitious squad overhaul.

(GSM) - Zambia are through to the quarter final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-2 win over Gabon in their final Group D match.
Gabon needed only a draw with Zambia to secure their spot in the quarter finals, but things did not go as planned for the team that entered their last match as group leaders.
Rainford Kalaba put last-placed Zambia in the lead after 29 minutes, and James Chamanga made it 0-2 three minutes after the hour mark.
Excitement returned in the final phase at Ombaka's Nacional Stadium, as Fabride Do Marcolino pulled one back for Gabon in the 83rd minute.
But Zambia held on to their lead to add three points to their account. Zambia, Gabon and Cameroon all have four points from three games but Cameroon and Zambia have the better goal record, leaving Gabon empty handed.

Zambia face Group C winners Egypt in their quarter final encounter.

An improved second half performance from Cameroon saw them over-turn a first-half deficit to snatch a 2-2 draw to squeeze through to the quarter finals at the 2010 African Cup of Nations. It was hardly the most convincing performance, but it just about enough to guarantee progression in second place in the group.
The match kicked off with the two bigger sides in the pool effectively playing off against each other for a place in the group stages with the winner guaranteeing progression, whilst the looser could only contemplate a return home.
Cameroon made six changes from the side that struggled past Zambia at the weekend with the most high profile casualties being veterans Rigobert Song and Geremi in the defence. Samuel Eto’o continued his wider role from the right flank, rather than his more accustomed central role.
Tunisia boss Faouzi Benzarti restricted himself to just two changes in comparison to the starting line-up that drew 0-0 against Gabon at the weekend. Mohamed Ali Nafkha took the place of Souheil Ben Radhia, whilst Youssef Msakni made way for Khaled Soussi. The latter change was to have almost an immediate effect for Tunisia. Straight from the kick-off Tunisia caught Cameroon napping when Souissi surged down the right flank. The Club Africain defender whipped in a wonderful cross, which was met by a stooping header from striker Amine Chermiti to divert the ball into the back of the Cameroon net to make it 0-1.
The opening phase of play was alas not a taste of further excitement in the game to come. Although Cameroon dominated possession, they seldom looked like creating a chance. Tunisia were content to sit back and let their more illustrious opponents have the ball and soak up pressure safe with their lead intact. The game certainly didn’t seem like it pitted the best ranked African side in the FIFA rankings in the form of Cameroon against Tunisia, a side who had qualified for three of the last four World Cups.
Guaranteed Narcolepsy cure…
After 30 minutes of lacklustre play, Tunisia were lucky to avoid going down to ten-men, when Aymen Mathlouti, Tunisian goalkeeper, clearly handled the ball outside his penalty area. Having been rashly tempted out of his area, Samuel Eto’o attempted to lift a shot over Mathlouti. However, the keeper stuck his hand out to stop the ball, and also what looked like a shot on target. The referee though issued only a yellow card and the free-kick just outside the box from which Samuel Eto’o placed an effort just wide of the far post.
Remarkably having soaked up pressure for nearly the entire half, Tunisia broke forward on 44 minutes as Hocine Ragued slipped a neat pass through the middle to left-back Yassin Mikari, who had rang across the line to pop up on the right side. However, having been forced wide as he broke clear, Mikari could hit only the side netting at the near post with his shot despite support from Armine Chermiti in the middle.
Deja-vu?
The second half started in similar fashion to the first with an early goal on 47 minutes, this time for Cameroon as they paid Tunisia back for their fast start. A pass was slipped through to Pierre Webo, having arrived on the pitch as a half-time substitute, who cut the ball back from the by-line to the lurking Samuel Eto’o. The Inter Milan forward rather scuffed his shot, but it had just enough direction to bounce in off the far post to make it 1-1.
The equalising goal seemed to spark Tunisia and an immediate response was forthcoming when Zouheir Dhaouadhi squared a ball across the face of the Cameroon goal when he could have taken the shot on himself.
Goal-scorer Samuel Eto’o could have taken the lead for the Indomitable Lions when left-back Georges Mandjeck curled a cross into the box to find the former Barcelona striker in acres of space. However, Eto’o slightly mistimed his jump and the effort came off the top of his head which looped the ball up and wide.
The second half continued in exciting fashion on 55 minutes when Dhaouadhi scrambled clear down the left side to swing a ball into the near post. With Chermiti closing in on the pass, Carlos Kameni in the Cameroon goal did brilliantly to bravely block the ball away from danger.
Tunisia fail to profit from Cameroon disaster

Cameroon continued to surge forward, and looked the more likely to create the third goal in the game. However, it was Tunisia who once again surprised. Substitute Chaouki Ben Saada lofted a ball into the penalty area hopefully where centre-back Aurelien Chedjou headed the ball up and over the advancing Carlos Kameni for a terrible own goal to make it 1-2..
Paul le Guen’s side though immediately hit back for the equalising goal after the best move of the match so far. Mohammodou Idrissou raided down the right flank, cut the ball back to Pierre Webo who teed up Celtic midfielder Landry N’Guemo to smash the ball home from the edge of the penalty area for 2-2.
On 80 minutes Samuel Eto’o and Pierre Webo nearly combined for Cameroon’s third goal of the game. Eto’o shifted the ball across to Webo, who curled a shot just wide of the far post with Mathlouti diving across, but relieved to see the ball drift just wide of the target.
Tunisia could have forced a winner which would take them through on 87 minutes when Karim Haggui got on the end of a free-kick into the box. However, the Hannover centre-back looped his header over the bar. The Tunisian task was made even harder when Haggui’s centre-back colleague Ammar Jemal saw red for his second yellow card. After picking up his first for a lunge earlier in the half, he foolishly pushed Samuel Eto’o. It was barely anything more than a slight shove, but the referee’s assistant drew the referee’s attention to the infringement and Jemal was dismissed.
Tunsia were unable to force another chance and despite turning in their best performance of the tournament, ended up exiting at the group-stage. Cameroon also produced their best performance of the 2010 African Cup of Nations, but it won’t have got quarter—final opponents Egypt too concerned. Le Guen’s side will need to improve significantly if they are to prevent the Pharaohs from romping into the semi-finals.

Ghana progressed to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup after a first-half goal by Andre Ayew saw them through in unconvincing fashion.
Ayew took advantage of some woeful marking by Burkina Faso to head home after half-an-hour and qualify in second place from Group B, behind Ivory Coast.
Burkina Faso's hopes of staging a comeback suffered a setback with the 66th-minute dismissal of defender Mamadou Tall.
However, it was a stuttering display by the Black Stars whose injury problems entering the match had worsened after Chelsea's Michael Essien was ruled out of the tournament.
Burkina Faso needed only to draw after holding Ivory Coast in the first match but Ghana had to win following their defeat to the Elephants.
Milovan Rajevac's side had no option to attack from the outset and they won a free-kick on the left wing in the first minute but Asamoah Gyan sent the ball over the bar.
The Ghanaians were then grateful to their goalkeeper in the eighth minute after the pacy Jonathan Pitroipa left defenders in his wake as he bore down on goal but Richard Kingson came out and blocked the shot from a tight angle.
Ghana then took the lead through Ayew's header. A free-kick cleared to the right was sent back into the box finding Ayew unmarked, and the midfielder diverted his header downwards into the right-hand corner of the net.

Ghana almost doubled their lead when Haminu Draman sent a ball across goal with Gyan just failing to get a touch.
The Burkinabe then sent in a teasing delivery from the right which narrowly eluded a lunging Bakary Kone with Kingson rooted to his goal line and Kone then blazed a shot over the top when well-placed.
However, just as the Burkinabe appeared to be making inroads, they were reduced to ten men after Tall was sent off following a challenge which left Gyan clutching his face, although the decision appear a harsh one.
Draman then missed a clear chance to double Ghana's lead when he put the ball into the side netting from close range when unmarked before Samuel Inkoom also went close.

Tevez proves his worth against old club

The script was written perfectly for Manchester City as Carlos Tevez struck twice against old club Manchester United to leave the Blues on the brink of their first domestic final since 1981 after a 2-1 win.

City need to avoid defeat at Old Trafford next week but if this game is any guide, it is destiny the Blues, subservient for so long - and Tevez, subject of such scorn when he quit United last summer - will have their day.
Tevez's two goals came after Ryan Giggs had given visitors United the lead, and his delirious celebrations reflected his, and City's, enthusiasm for putting one over on their neighbours.
The friction around the City of Manchester Stadium as the lights were dimmed before kick-off for a rendition of `Blue Moon' was only made even more intense by a couple of red flares in the visiting end that glowed United's response.
It set the scene for a scintillating encounter between the two halves of Manchester, one potless but loaded, the other using the vast array of trophies as insulation against a chilling debt piling up outside.
For a good half an hour, it appeared Sir Alex Ferguson had got his tactics spot-on.
Although Wayne Rooney was a lone frontman, the extra man further back meant United were able to dominate midfield.
Antonio Valencia hugged one flank, Giggs rolled back the years on the other, and between them Darren Fletcher, Anderson and Michael Carrick passed the ball around City heads going dizzy as they tried to keep up.
Rooney had already been denied from close range once when he got on the end of Patrice Evra's shot, only for rookie defender Dedryck Boyata to make the block.
So when a similar effort from the England star was turned away by Shay Given after Valencia had skipped past his marker, it was a first victory for the Irishman in what turned into a personal duel.
But the rebound rolled into the path of Giggs, the 36-year-old who has appeared in more of these matches than anyone else. From three yards Giggs could not miss. His first derby goal since 1996.
At that stage, City looked as though they were going to be completely outplayed, but slowly the tide began to turn.
Tevez wasted a glorious chance when Shaun Wright-Phillips picked him out with a superb curling cross, then Micah Richards thudded a headed into Boyata's back after Bellamy had been the provider.
In the end, City needed a controversial penalty to get their equaliser. Controversial in the sense Rafael was outside the area when he began an extended tug of Bellamy's shirt.
The offence was clear enough and as the Brazilian teenager - the one youngster Ferguson eventually picked - was inside the box when he let go, referee Mike Dean felt a spot-kick was the suitable punishment.
Edwin van der Sar used all his experience to try to put Tevez off. But the former United man was not having any off it and eventually stepped up to confidently ram home the penalty into the top of the net.
Tevez had enough dignity not to celebrate directly in front of the fans who bellowed 'Fergie, sign him up' from the Stretford End last year.
But the sight of Gary Neville was too much to resist and Tevez delivered a `shut your mouth' hand gesture to his former skipper, who backed Ferguson's decision to get rid of the Argentinian.
For all the understandable focus on Tevez, the most influential man on the pitch was Given, who turned away yet another point-blank effort when Giggs got his head to Rooney's deep cross.
The worth of that save did not become apparent until City's next attack when Vincent Kompany hooked a wayward Pablo Zabaleta's shot straight onto Tevez's head.
As he scored and Eastlands erupted, the striker this time immediately raced to the home dug-out and cupped his ears, in exactly the same manner he did when he scored for United in a Premier League meeting between these two sides late last season, when the Old Trafford crowd's demand for him to stay was at its peak.
Just yards away, Ferguson stared straight ahead, chewing his gum furiously. Again the chant was "sign him up''. This time it was City doing the singing.
Tevez's work was done. Given still had more to do. Rooney was denied three more times as United laid siege at the end looking for an equaliser. They still have another 90 minutes to get one. But Tevez will want more as well.
Mancini delighted for hero TevezRoberto Mancini expressed his delight for Carlos Tevez after the South American had returned to haunt Manchester United - and gave Manchester City a "51% chance'' of reaching the Carling Cup final."I am very happy for Carlos,'' Mancini said. "He is an ex-Manchester United player so this game was very important for him. To score two goals was excellent. I only hope that he plays the same way in the second game because he played a big game tonight.''"It is not a big advantage, but it is an advantage. I am happy with the result because we were behind after 20 minutes and I felt it could be difficult. But we recovered, scored two goals and played well."They had three or four chances but, in Shay Given, we have one of the best goalkeepers. Now I would say we have a 51% chance.''Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to insist that there was no problem with Tevez after his former player appeared to gesture with his hands to his ears in front of the United manager. Ireland back in City squad

Stephen Ireland will return to the Manchester City bench for the Carling Cup semi-final with Manchester United at Eastlands.

Ireland has missed three games after picking up a hamstring injury at Wolves, but Roberto Mancini will have the midfielder amongst his substitutes as City look to establish a first-leg lead.

Roque Santa Cruz will miss his club's bid to reach a first domestic final since 1981 after suffering a recurrence of his calf injury at Everton, while Patrick Vieira (calf) will not be considered for his debut.

Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini has claimed Manchester City could one day knock United off their pedestal as England's biggest club.

Mancini will experience his first local derby at Eastlands tomorrow knowing victory in the two-legged semi-final would secure City a place in a major domestic showpiece for the first time since 1981.

Given the amounts of cash owner Sheikh Mansour has already invested, with the promise of much more to come, it seems only a matter of time before a 34-year trophy drought comes to an end as well.

And, given United's much-publicised financial restraints, there are some who feel it is also only a matter of time before the Red Devils are usurped as top dogs.

It may seem improbable given United have joined Liverpool on 18 titles by winning 11 since the Premier League was formed in 1992, but Mancini does not believe it is beyond the realms of possibility.

"If we work well, it is possible,'' said the Italian.

"United have a big history. They have been a good team for many years.

"City can become a big team in the next year. It is most important that we get into the top four.

"That would change the situations. Surely it would be better if City were also a big club in the future because then Manchester could have two clubs in the Champions League.''

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he got it wrong in expressing fears Dimitar Berbatov was struggling with his knee injury again.

Berbatov scored the opening goal in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday but was substituted before the end and headed straight down the tunnel for treatment.

Immediately after the game Ferguson claimed his £30.75million record signing had suffered a recurrence of a knee injury which he has been advised to have an exploratory operation on.

In fact, the former Tottenham star had only suffered a dead leg and while he is a doubt for Tuesday's game, he has not completely been ruled out.

"I thought Dimitar had got a knock on the knee. It turned out it was a dead leg and we are having a look at that it.

"I am hoping he will be all right but he is a doubt and we will see what he is like in the morning.''

Ferguson also confirmed Ryan Giggs would not be considered, and neither will Rio Ferdinand, even though the England star is continuing to edge closer to a comeback after three months out with a back injury.

"Rio is training quite well now,'' he said. "He is a lot closer now but he is not in contention for Tuesday.''

However, the United boss is considering whether to add a bit of youth to his team in the form of Darron Gibson and the Da Silva twins Rafael and Fabio.

Having already absolved the younger members of his side from blame for the shock home FA Cup defeat by Leeds, Ferguson would have no qualms about putting them into such a high pressure encounter.

But it does seem the United boss intends to select a far stronger team than the one he originally intended when the draw was made last month.

"I have got to think about getting a mix in terms of the programme we have got and also the fact I have given young players a game in the past,'' he said.

"I will have a strongish team but there will be some young players as well.''

Angola and Algeria both advanced to the quarter-finals of the African Nations Cup thanks to a goalless draw in Luanda.

With Mali beating Malawi in the other Group A match, a point apiece proved enough in a game that started brightly before petering out in the second half.

The hosts went into the match top of the pool and knowing a draw would be enough to guarantee their progress.

But their approach was certainly not one of containment as Gilberto and Jose Alberto both tried their luck from long range in the early stages.

Algeria should have been ahead midway through the half, though, after Nadir Belhadj's free-kick caught out the Angola defence.

Hassan Yebda failed to make contact with an overhead kick but the ball fell to Madjid Bougherra five yards out. However, he could not beat goalkeeper Carlos.

Gilberto fired a free-kick over the bar and, at the other end, Abdelkader Ghezzal beat Carlos to the ball but his touch was too heavy and he could not take advantage.

In the 26th minute, a superb free-kick from Ze Kalanga was heading for the top corner only for Faouzi Chaouchi to pull off an equally brilliant save.

The Algeria stopper should have been given no chance two minutes from the break when Kalanga picked out Djalma in the area but he did not strike his shot cleanly and Chaouchi saved with his legs.

The Desert Hawks began the second half on the offensive and Karim Matmour just failed to get a touch on Hameur Bouazza's wicked low cross.

Bouazza then poked wide from a tight angle on the hour mark but, with both sides looking set to book their spots in the last eight, the pace dropped markedly.

The only moment of concern for Algeria came with four minutes remaining when Jamuana's free-kick almost squirmed under Chaouchi.

Angola topped the group thanks to their victory over Malawi and two draws while Algeria finished level on four points with Mali but progress courtesy of their 1-0 victory over their rivals - the only match in which they have found the net.

A dream start for Mali gave them a first win in this year's African Nations Cup, but Angola's goalless draw with Algeria meant both they and Malawi missed out on a place in the quarter-finals.Frederic Kanoute scored after just a minute thanks to a goalkeeping blunder from Swadick Sanudi and Seydou Keita added a second with a thumping free-kick two minutes later.
Russel Mwafulirwa pulled one back for Malawi after 58 minutes, but he will go to bed tonight ruing a missed header after 71 minutes which could have put his side through.
Instead, Mamadou Bagayoko added another for Mali with four minutes to play, but the result was of no use to either side.
Mali, who needed an Algeria defeat to progress, were 2-0 up in Cabinda within three minutes through two contrasting goals.
The first was lucky, as Sanudi's clearance went straight to Kanoute, who had a simple task to volley into an empty net.
The second was pure class though - a bullet 30-yard free-kick from Keita which arrowed into the top-left corner.
Keita had the chance to add to his tally in the 20th minute but his low shot was dealt with by Sanudi.
After 26 minutes Peter Wadabwa headed a rare Malawi chance high and wide when unmarked at the back post.
The better chances continued to fall to Mali though.
Ten minutes from the break Bagayoko did well down the left channel, producing a neat stepover before firing at goal but the save was comfortable enough for Sanudi.
And in stoppage time, El Hadj Traore lashed a wild shot at goal on the counter-attack when Bagayoko was free in the centre.
Malawi pulled one back after 58 minutes - and it was the ugliest of goals.
Dave Banda's cross reached substitute Atusaye Nyondo who turned the ball back across goal.
A combination of Mali defenders and keeper Mahamadou Sidibe could only get the ball to Chiukepo Msowoya, whose shot was blocked, and Russel finally guided the ball home.
Three minutes later, Keita's powerful strike was turned over by Sanudi - and Mali should have had a penalty when Essau Kanyenda clattered into the Barcelona man, but referee Rajin Seechurn inexplicably saw no offence.
Malawi should have been level after 71 minutes but Russel somehow contrived to miss an open goal from two yards.
Joseph Kamwendo's cross found the striker unmarked at the back post and, with Sidibe stranded, he headed the ball into the ground and over the bar.
Bagayoko compounded that miss with a simple headed goal at the other end, but events in Luanda meant both sides bowed out with Algeria progressing from Group A courtesy of their earlier win over Mali.

A Manchester United fans' group is considering asking Sir Alex Ferguson to quit as manager of the club, in protest of the Glazer family's ownership of the reigning Premier League champions.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust (previously Shareholders United) - widely accepted as the fans' "official opposition" to the Glazers after they attempted unsuccesfully to prevent the Americans' 2005 takeover - met to discuss the club's current situation before United's 3-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday. Many agreed it is time for Ferguson, in charge at Old Trafford for more than 23 years, to stand down in order to make a drastic statement about the club's financial situation.
Ferguson has often defended the Glazers but was openly opposed to their takeover before it went through, with Johnny Flacks, a founding member and former chairman of the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association, suggesting that a letter campaign directed at the United boss could convince him to resign.
"This is not intended as an Alex Ferguson rant," Flacks told the Guardian. "But he claims to be a socialist, a former shop steward and a man of the people, so he must be horrified by what is going on.
"It would work only if thousands of people sent a copy of this letter to Ferguson letting him know that our fear, if the Glazers stay in control, is that his legacy is going to be destroyed. We wouldn't want that and I don't think he would either."
Fans also discussed the possibility of asking United fans' favourite and Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona to act as their figurehead, and plans are being put in place for a protest march before the Champions League tie against Milan on March 10.
United supporters' groups have been in fervent opposition to the Glazer family, both before the takeover in June 2005, and ever since - with anti-Glazer chanting rife during the win against Burnley. Stewards were also quick to confiscate a large banner reading: "Love United, hate Glazer", after it was briefly unfurled at the Stretford End.
The Glazers recently revealed a refinancing plan but it has been met by scepticism by most supporters, with many now believing that Ferguson, who has led United throught he most successful era in the club's history, should make the ultimate sacrifice and quit the Old Trafford hotseat.
"We are talking about a manager who has achieved so much for the club and has created the monster that is Manchester United," Flack said. But we have to look at the greater good and at the moment we have the ludicrous situation where a club that gets over 70,000 supporters is losing money.
"This would be Ferguson's chance of saying that something had to be done. He would be looking after the club in the longer term if it meant the Glazers would sell more quickly. And if he said he was going to resign, maybe that would also encourage potential buyers to hurry up."
"Moving to Carrington was his baby and he must be horrified that the Glazers could now be thinking of selling Carrington and then arranging for it to be leased back," Flacks said. "That would make Manchester United no better than a non-league club not even owning a training ground."
