Reds favour delaying Berbatov knee surgery
Sir Alex Ferguson is crossing his fingers record signing Dimitar Berbatov can make it to the end of the season without needing knee surgery.
Berbatov has been struggling with the injury since November and Ferguson revealed last week the advice has been for the £30.75million forward to have an exploratory operation so medical staff can work out the extent of the problem.
"If we could see it through until the end of the season it would be better,'' said the Red Devils chief.
"The advice was to have an exploratory operation but Dimitar wants to play through it.
"Sometimes he feels it and sometimes he doesn't. Maybe the climate helped but he didn't feel it when we went away, so he trained every day.
"It is a difficult one and if he is feeling OK it is not a problem.
"But if he is keeps continually coming up against a problem we would have to make a decision on it.''
Although the Scot was prevented from entering into any discussion about the Old Trafford outfit's debt mountain - and their plans to tackle it, which he backed seven days ago - due to "regulatory compliance'' - United could certainly do with some of the heat being taken off the club by the team putting a consistent run of results together.
On the face of it, an FA Cup home defeat by League One Leeds, followed by a draw at Birmingham does not achieve that objective.
The likely return of Edwin van der Sar, who has missed 12 successive matches, initially due to a knee injury suffered against Everton on November 21, then because his wife Annemarie suffered a stroke back home in Holland, should help bring some stability to United's defence, which Ferguson believes is crucial to any change in fortune.
Yet United must also take a far greater percentage of their chances, starting against a Burnley side whose depressing run of away results - just one point so far this season - is being balanced out by impressive home form that began with that shock defeat of Saturday's opponents at Turf Moor in August.
The added dimension this time around is Owen Coyle's exit for Bolton and the installation of Brian Laws as his replacement.
Laws took a leaf out of Sir Alex's book on mind-games by claiming the pressure will all be on Manchester United - and that the reigning champions are going through "a sticky patch".
Laws' first match as a Premier League manager will see him searching for what would be an amazing double following the Clarets' 1-0 win in August.
The 48-year-old also claimed that the whole country will be behind the Lancashire side.
Laws said: "There's an air of confidence in the camp and the pressure has totally transferred on to Manchester United.
"They are having a sticky moment and this may be a good time to play them. We will go there with no fear and they will be very wary about whether Burnley will do the double over them.
"Burnley deserved the result at the start of the season and the whole country was delighted. It gave a realism back to football and this was what Burnley had been waiting for for 30 years.
"There's no reason why they can't go and do it again, everything is possible.''
Laws trod the Old Trafford turf regularly as a player when he was a full-back in Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest side, but this will be the first time he has crossed swords with Ferguson directly.
"I know he likes a glass of wine after the match and I shall have to bring a nice bottle for him,'' added Laws. "I'm not particularly keen on wine personally but I'll give him a crate if it gives us the points!''
Ferguson is one of the few who can beat Laws' number of games as a league manager in England but the former Sheffield Wednesday, Scunthorpe and Grimsby boss has until now plied his trade in the lower divisions racking up around 700 matches in charge.
"I don't really need to justify it but people keep saying 'you haven't got any managerial experience in the Premiership' and they are right but I can quite whitewash anybody in terms of games,'' added Laws.
"It's about managing people and football clubs and we are in the Premiership but it's nothing different to anywhere apart from being with better players.''
Laws faces major problems in central defence. Skipper Steven Caldwell (groin) is definitely out while Clarke Carlisle is rated as only 50-50 with a side strain. Meanwhile Andre Bikey is absent on African Nations Cup duty.
Michael Duff is expected to continue at centre-back and if Carlisle fails to make it that could mean a league debut for young Canadian defender David Edgar, signed in the summer from Newcastle.

Bayern Munich started 2010 as they finished 2009 to go top of the Bundesliga table for the first time since May 2008.
Martin Demichelis slid home the first against Hoffenheim in the 35th minute before Miroslav Klose wrapped up victory four minutes from time to give Louis van Gaal's men their fifth straight league win.
It lifted them a point clear of Bayer Leverkusen, who have a game in hand.
Hoffenheim had the first sight of goal in the sixth minute as Demba Ba stretched to reach Boris Vukcevic's cross from the left, but could not get any direction on his effort and it went over.
Bayern, though, were looking fluent in possession, only to be let down on a couple of occasions by a poor final ball.
Bastian Schweinsteiger's free-kick narrowly missed the far post as no Bayern player managed to get a telling touch on the ball.
At the other end, Vedad Ibisevic's shot was parried away by Hans-Jorg Butt and Franco Zuculini could not react quick enough to pounce on the loose ball.
Bayern went ahead in the 35th minute as Schweinsteiger's cross from the left skipped off the top of a defender's head and dropped to Demichelis, who slid in to guide his shot across Timo Hildebrand and into the far corner.
Sejad Salihovic headed into the side netting for Hoffenheim three minutes later before Bayern took control after the break.
Gomez fired over after a parry from Hildebrand, who then beat away a left-footed shot from Thomas Muller after the Bayern man cut in from the right.
Ba was denied by Butt in the 72nd minute on a rare Hoffenheim attack in the second half.
Gomez shot wide from Arjen Robben's cut-back as the hosts continued to threaten a second, and it duly arrived in the 86th minute as Klose diverted home a shot from Mark van Bommel.
Gomez fired against the post in the final minute of normal time, but Bayern were already home and dry.

Black Stars blown away by 10-man Elephants
Gervinho, Siaka Chico Tiene and Didier Drogba were on target as tournament favourites Ivory Coast secured their first victory of the African Nations Cup with a 3-1 win over Ghana in Cabinda.
Gervinho finished off a fluid counter-attacking move after 23 minutes to give Ivory Coast the lead, but they were reduced to 10 men after 55 minutes when Emmanuel Eboue was shown a straight red card for a reckless two-footed tackle.
Matthew Amoah struck a post as Ghana came close to an equaliser before Tiene netted a stunning left-footed free-kick after 66 minutes and Didier Drogba headed in a 90th-minute third.
Asamoah Gyan converted a penalty with the last kick of the game, but it was not enough to prevent the Elephants from progressing to the quarter-finals.
Ghana must beat Burkina Faso next Tuesday to join Ivory Coast in the last eight.
The Black Stars were playing in their first game of the contest after their scheduled opening fixture did not take place following Togo's withdrawal from the competition in the wake of last week's terrorist attack on the team bus.
And they looked lethargic throughout and were cut apart as Ivory Coast turned defence into attack to take the lead.
The Elephants successfully defended a corner and burst forward at pace.
Yaya Toure threaded the ball through to Salomon Kalou on the right and the Chelsea forward centred for Gervinho to tap in.
A fantastic effort from Kwadwo Asamoah almost brought Ghana level.
He received the ball with his back to goal 20 yards out, but turned and unleashed a fierce left-footed shot which appeared destined for the top corner until Barry Boubacar Copa palmed the ball clear.
Michael Essien, who began the match on the bench after recent hamstring struggle, was introduced at half-time and Ghana's chances increased when Eboue was dismissed for a senseless two-footed lunge on Agyemang Opoku, who was deep in his own half.
Ghana immediately went on the attack and Amoah pounced on a loose ball just inside the penalty area, striking a left-foot volley which hit the base of the post.
But Ivory Coast soon doubled their lead when Tiene hit a free-kick from wide on the right which curled into the top corner.
Drogba headed in a third at the back post after persistent play and a pin-point cross from substitute Abdulkader Keita, before a soft penalty was awarded in stoppage time and Gyan sent Boubacar Copa the wrong way.

Mali enjoyed an early period of pressure and Mustapha Yatabare's second-minute free-kick caused problems in the Algerian defence but Mahamadou Diarra was unable to find a team-mate with his pull-back after beating Algeria keeper Faouzi Chaouchi to the loose ball.
But the Desert Foxes hit back and Karim Ziani's swerving, dipping cross almost caught out Soumaila Diakite in the Mali goal as it struck the top of the crossbar.
Yatabare went close at the other end as his long-range strike flew into the side netting.
Despite those early chances, the game was blighted by poor midfield play from both teams, with neither side capable of keeping possession long enough to create any genuine chances.
Abdelkader Ghezzal headed wide for Algeria after Hassan Yebda's threatening cross while Mali's best hope of a goal stemmed from the confusion that Yatabare's free-kicks caused their opponents.

Zambia and Tunisia failed to take advantage of Group D rivals Cameroon's shock African Nations Cup loss to Gabon as the two nations had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Lubango.
The Zambians will be most disappointed not to have got off to a winning start after largely dominating the game and seeing a late header from substitute Emmanuel Mayuka ruled out for offside.
The underdogs had made a fine start with the dangerous Rainford Kalaba striking the side-netting, while Tunisia looked a shadow of the side who had for a long time been one of the dominant forces on the continent.
Zambia took the lead in the 19th minute when Jacob Mulenga unselfishly played the ball back to James Chamanga in the box and his weak shot dribbled under Aymen Mathlouthi and into the net.
Kalaba had a shot blocked just past the half-hour and Zambia looked likely to add to their tally until Tunisia equalised out of nowhere in the 39th minute, Souheil Dhaoudadi slamming a cross by Youssef Msakni into the roof of the net.
The Tunisians started the second half stronger but Zamiba soon came back with Kampamba Chuntu missing a header in front of goal and Chamanga providing a constant thread.
Kalaba had the best chance in the 69th minute when he rose to meet a superb deep cross from Christopher Katongo but directed his free header into the ground when he should have scored.

CAN 2010 : Cameroon 0 - 1 Gabon
Cousin goal shocks Indomitable Lions
This year's African Nations Cup threw up another upset this afternoon as Gabon took down one of the tournament favourites, Cameroon, in the first Group D game.
Hull City striker Daniel Cousin took advantage of a defensive mix-up to grab the only goal after 17 minutes. Cameroon pressured the Black Panthers for much of the match but could produce an equaliser, as Gabon secured only their second ever African Nations Cup victory.
Cameroon did all the early pressing with Landry N'Guemo going close from a tight angle before Didier Ovono had to turn Achille Emana's snap shot from the right channel on to the post and out for a corner.
It was against the run of play when Gabon snatched the lead with less than 20 minutes gone. Cameroon's defence got themselves in a mess, allowing a mis-kicked pass from Cedric Moubamba to find its way into the path of Cousin, who slipped a low shot past Carlos Kameni.
Paul Le Guen's side almost responded moments later as Alex Song surged forward. The midfielder was brought down on the edge of the area but the referee waved play on as the ball fell for Pierre Webo, who saw his low shot saved.
Geremi's long-range free-kick then seemed to have Ovono in trouble, but he awkwardly punched it away.The second half took time to come to life but Emana almost scored an explosive equaliser with a long-range half-volley out of nothing that flashed wide.
A quick free-kick just before the hour mark released Emana inside the area but as he closed on the goalkeeper he sliced his shot horribly wide.
Cameroon were struggling to get star striker Samuel Eto'o involved and his first decent shot from inside the area was deflected wide.
Emana then forced a good save from Ovono before substitute Somen Tchoyi flashed a powerful shot wide, but it was beginning to look like it might not be Cameroon's day.
Ovono made a good save to keep out Geremi's deflected free-kick in the final minute of normal time and Song then sent Cameroon's last chance over the crossbar.
Gabon almost sealed it when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang smashed the ball against the crossbar in injury time, but Cousin's strike proved enough.

Egypt made a winning start to the defence of their African Nations Cup crown with an impressive fightback against Nigeria in Group C.

CAN 2010 : Ivory Coast 0 - 0 Burkina Faso Favourites held in stalemate
Vahid Halilhodzic's team dominated possession but could not find the cutting edge to break down a determined Burkinabe defence despite an impressive frontline of Didier Drogba, Bakari Kone and Gervinho.
The players observed a minute's silence prior to kick-off in memory of the three people killed in Friday's gun attack on the Togo team bus in the Angolan enclave of Cabinda.
When the action got under way, Drogba had an early shout for a penalty after a sliding challenge from Paul Koulibaly, but the referee gave only a corner.
Yaya Toure had the first real sight of goal in the fifth minute but could not get his shot away following Gervinho's cross from the right.
Kone lashed over the bar moments later as the Ivorians made all the early running.
Gervinho was again the provider ten minutes later but Kone could only head wide when unmarked on the left side of the penalty area.
Emmanuel Eboue looked to be caught in the area by Mamadou Tall after 20 minutes but again the referee was unmoved.
Eboue then burst through down the right only to fire across goal and Siaka Tiene blasted over from a tight angle following Drogba's cross from the right.
Cheik Tiote came close to breaking the deadlock eight minutes before the break with a long-range shot which curled into the side-netting, and Drogba's neat first touch on the left set up Kone only for Daouda Diakite to tip over the bar five minutes later.
Kone was played through by a fine reverse ball from Yaya Toure ten minutes after the interval but lashed wide and passed up an even better opportunity 13 minutes later when he finished off a swift counter-attack by skewing horribly wide from six yards following fine work on the left by Gervinho.
That proved the last action of the match for the Marseille striker, who was replaced by Kader Keita moments later.
Salomon Kalou and Aruna Dindane were also introduced as Halilhodzic looked to instigate the breakthrough.
Drogba was cynically brought down by Mohamed Koffi on the edge of the box 17 minutes from time but the free-kick came to nothing.
The Chelsea frontman did test Diakite in the 85th minute but the Burkinabe goalkeeper was equal to his snap-shot from a tight angle as the Ivorians' frustration continued.

Malawi stunned Algeria at a near-deserted November 11 stadium as the unpredictable start to the African Nations Cup continued.
Algeria began the match as clear favourites, but were 2-0 down by half-time thanks to goals from Russel Mwafulirwa and Elvis Kafoteka.
Dave Banda added a third after 49 minutes to end any thoughts of an Algeria comeback.
Sunday's 4-4 draw between hosts Angola and Mali did not appear to have captured the public's imagination as the players kicked off in Luanda in front of rows and rows of empty seats.
An early angled strike from Abdelkader Ghezzal was saved by Malawi goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi after five minutes. Ghezzal had another chance moments later but could not find the target.
After eight minutes, Russel found a yard in the Algeria box but headed wide under pressure from Madjid Bougherra.
Malawi surprised their opponents in the 17th minute when they took the lead in somewhat fortuitous fashion.
Algeria goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi attempted to clear a long ball but only succeeded in smashing the ball straight into the advancing Essau Kanyenda.
The ball broke to Russel, who gleefully hammered the ball home.
Rafik Saifi had a great chance to level after 24 minutes when he was played through by Karim Ziani's ball over the top but he sent a lobbed effort over the bar.
And 10 minutes before the break it was 2-0 as Kafoteka rose highest to head home Hellings Mwakasungula's cross following a short corner.
And Algeria's day got even worse four minutes after the break.
Chaouchi flapped at a cross and the ball fell to Russel. His shot hit the post and an attempted clearance from Bougherra broke to Banda, who finally smashed the ball home.
It was the last action of the match from Banda, who injured himself in scoring and limped off the pitch moments later.
Mustapha Yatabare headed over when he should have pulled one back for Algeria, while at the other end Chiukepo Msowoya headed into the side netting.
But it was a deflated Algeria team by that point and they offered little in the closing stages as Malawi went top of Group A.

Trailing 4-0 and seemingly playing for pride after a brace from Flavio Amado and penalties from Gilberto and Manucho had put the home side in front with just 11 minutes remaining, Seydou Keita gave the Eagles hope when he scrambled the ball home from a Carlos Fernandes error.But Frederic Kanoute glanced home a fine header to halve the deficit in the 87th minute, before a second from Keita in time added on and Yatabare's effort completed a sensational turnaround which stunned the home fans at the Estadio 11 de Novembro.It all looked so different moments earlier after the Black Antelopes had raced ahead to help lift a sombre mood on day one of the competition which has been marred by an attack on the Togo team which left three people dead.Manuel Jose's men began sprightly with Flavio firing the first shot on goal from 25 yards out.The Eagles, who looked nervous throughout the opening half, slowly began to improve and their first real sniff of goal came after 20 minutes, but Modibo Maiga squandered the chance when his back-heeled pass on the edge of the penalty area failed to find any team-mate.The Angolans were forced into an early change three minutes later when Dede had to go off with what looked like an ankle injury.His replacement Djalma Campos had the best opening of the two sides just after the half-hour mark when Mabina's pinpoint cross from the right was met with a powerful header at the near post, which was unfortunately straight at Mahamadou Sidibe.But the host did not have much longer to wait for the opening, which came in the 37th minute.It came when the visitors needlessly brought down Manucho just outside the penalty area on the left.Gilberto cleverly sought out Flavio with the ensuing free-kick instead of going for goal and his cross was powerfully met by the Al-Shabab striker to leave Sidibe stranded.The Malians were rocked and it was 2-0 five minutes later - Mabina finding an unmarked Flavio with his cross from the right and the ball was again impressively headed in to hand the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead.The Eagles began promisingly after the break and should have equalised when a cross from the right found Mahamadou Diarra unmarked at the back post, but he took his time, giving goalkeeper Carlos Fernandes time to make an acrobatic save that helped avert the danger.Minutes later Kanoute had a first shot on goal, but he skewed his shot wildly over as Mali searched for a lifeline.But their constant pressure came to nothing, with Angola going 3-0 up in the 67th minute after a fine counter-attack led to Mamadou Bagayoko bringing down Gilberto in the penalty area.The Al-Ahly midfielder stood up to take the spot-kick himself - scoring with both attempts after he was asked to retake his first one due to players entering the box too early.Seven minutes later Keita bizarrely conceded another penalty when Gilberto was for the second time hauled back in the area.This time Manucho stepped forward to send Sidibe the wrong way. There was still time for Mali to attempt a comeback and they were gifted a goal 11 minutes from the end when Fernandes spilt a poor corner and Keita bundled the ball in.Kanoute halved the deficit with a powerfully glanced header with three minutes left and when the fourth official signalled four additional minutes it seemed to deflate the hosts.They took their foot of the pedal and Keita's angled finish was followed by Yatabare's 94th minute goal - after Fernandes could only parry into his path - to hand Stephen Keshi's side a share of the spoils.
