Manchester United 3 - 1 Manchester City

United are through to Wembley after winning 4-3 on aggregate, Rooney the late hero. Thank you for all your comments, they were all much appreciated.

Full Time Full-time!!!

90+3 Webb looks at his watch...

Rooney just might have sent United to Wembley. Giggs bends in a classy cross and Rooney powers a close-range header into the goal. 4-3 United on aggregate.

90+2 GOAL - Rooney scores for United!!!

90+1 Three minutes of added time will be played.

90 Valencia enters the fray for Nani, who has had a fairly decent game.

88 Ferdinand makes a massive challenge on Tevez, who was set to wind up for a shot at goal.

87 Opportunity for Adebayor as Bellamy digs out a cross. But the striker's header is very poor indeed.

84 It's on a knife-edge here. Just for the record, away goals do not come into effect until extra-time, if we get to that point.

81 Carrick goes mighty close. Excellent attack from United and Kompany does everything he can to block out the shot. It finally falls to Carrick, whose effort zips wide of the far post.

80 Rooney's earlier miss when the scoreline was 2-0 could really prove to be costly now. Impossible to criticise the man though - 20 goals for the season remember.

78 Incredible drama, eh. City now have their tails up.

Bellamy sends in a curling cross and Tevez angles the shot past Van der Sar. A fine finish from the striker. All level overall now!

Goal76 GOAL - Tevez scores for City!!!

Substitution75 Brown is on for Rafael.

73 Massive miss. Rooney puts it wide from just six yards out. It came at him at some pace, but he really should have scored.

Substitution72 Adebayor is on for City, replacing SWP

Fletcher runs onto a through ball and is pushed away from goal, but he tees up Carrick, who arrows in a composed finish that clips the post on its way into goal. United lead on aggregate now.

Goal71 GOAL - Carrick scores for United!!!

70 Nope. Webb just gives everyone a right good rollicking.

69 Could be some cards handed out here after Richards and Fletcher clash.

68 Zabaleta is at left-back.

67 City work a clever set-piece and they see the ball flash over the bar. Might have been a push from Bellamy during that passage of play, but Webb did not see it.

Yellow Card65 Booking for Nani after he apparently catches Zabaleta.

Substitution64 Ireland is on for Garrido. Zabaleta at left-back maybe?

64 United are hitting the right channel with long and early balls time and time again. Nani is enjoying plenty of the ball.

61 Amazing cross from Nani from the right channel. It dribbles along the six-yard area but Boyata lunges and hammers it over the bar for a corner.

59 It's all United now. City's clearances are just coming straight back at them.

58 Carnage in the City area as a cross pings about all over the place. They scramble clear.

56 Terrific defending from Kompany, who makes a last-ditch block as Rooney looks to bundle the ball home.

54 City respond to the goal well with some slick passing.

Rooney takes a superb touch and then searched out Giggs with a wonderful pass. The Welshman rather wastes the attack but a deflection falls kindly for Scholes, who blasts home with a low effort.

Goal52 GOAL - Scholes scores for United!!!

51 Oh dear. Bellamy down after seemingly being hit by an object thrown from the crowd. A coin certainly hits him on the head. He is back on is feet. Shocking behaviour from a section of fans there.

50 Super tempo at the beginning of this half.

Yellow Card48 Booking for Tevez, who is penalised for a strong tackle on Rafael. It is getting fiery now.

47 That is some strike. Richards shows excellent strength and runs at the United defence. He hits a corker of a left-footed strike at goal and Van der Sar is forced to reach high at the top corner and parry wide.

46 City get the second half under way.

20.57 We are seeing some replays of when Ferdinand tracked back to squeeze out that mazy run from Tevez. There is possibly a half-shout for a penalty there. Webb probably got it just right though.

20.55 The majority of United fans getting in contact do not seem to happy. They are calling for a change, possibly Berbatov on to play alongside Rooney.

Goalless at the break but City of course lead 2-1 on aggregate. Mancini will be a happy chappy after that 45 minutes. Both sides had half-chances, with Tevez's diving header arguably the opportunity of the half.

Half TimeHalf-time.

45 One minute added time will be played.

44 Smart work from Zabaleta allows SWP to have a pop at range. But the strike is straight at the keeper.

42 Rafael is a little lucky to avoid a caution after he goes in very rashly on Bellamy.

41 United are trying to increase the tempo of the game, which has gone a little bit flat in the past few minutes.

38 Nani crosses in a free-kick from the left but Richards is there as he rises well to nod away from goal.

Yellow Card36 Scholes is the first player into the book for a late and rather crude tackle into the ankles of SWP.

35 The biggest cheer of the night so far comes when United's goalkeeper and defence pop the ball around with Tevez chasing hopefully but hopelessly.

33 Another chance for United. They put together a brilliant move which threatens to break down only for Boyata to slip. Carrick crosses and Given smothers with Rooney waiting to slot home.

32 Fine stop from Given. Giggs has a snap shot on the edge of the area and the powerful strike is saved well by the City keeper, who was forced to get down quickly.

31 Almost 1-0 City. Bellamy surges down the left channel and fires in a lowish cross. Tevez meets it with a diving header and Van der Sar is forced to make a smart save. Close shave for United.

29 Barry is perhaps lucky to escape without a booking after a very obvious handball in the centre of the park.

27 Zabaleta goes down off the ball after catching Rooney. Webb does very well and diffuses the situation, with no cards drawn.

25 Frightening run from Tevez as he uses pace and then trickery to scare the United defence. He is finally ushered out as Van der Sar gathers. There was real danger there.

23 Best effort of the game. SWP gets the better of Evra and picks out Bellamy with a cross. It is quite a way out for the Welshman, whose header is on target but comfortable for Van der Sar.

21 Tevez is down holding his face after Ferdinand catches the Argentine in the face with his arm. Webb remains calm over the issue and play is to continue without any card dealt out.

19 Half-chance for Ferdinand as he finds himself unmarked at the near post from a United corner. But the defender's flick flashes wide of the post.

17 Brilliant teasing cross from Nani but Boyata is positioned well to head the ball away from the lurking Rooney.

16 United defend the corner well and they counter from the clearance. But Rooney's pass is cut out by the back-tracking SWP.

15 City keep the ball for a while, which is a vast improvement. Their play wins them a corner.

13 Giggs' free-kick is headed away but only to a lurking Scholes, who hits first time from some distance as the fierce effort zooms a few yards over the bar.

12 Chance for United here after Zabaleta commits a foul near the corner flag.

11 United are pressing so well in the middle of the park. City are struggling to cope with it.

10 A change of right glove for Given. Thought you might like to know.

9 Sheer quality from Rooney as he pull down a long ball from Giggs before unleashing an effort at goal. It is a little central and Given is there to pick up.

8 Nani is penalised for a late clip on Zabaleta. No card but a stern telling off for the winger from ref Webb.

7 City win a free-kick and Barry drops a ball in the area but the cross is not good and Van der Sar gathers with ease.

6 United win a third corner but again it is cleared. United have a second bite of the cherry with an Evra cross but Fletcher's header is quite a way off target.

5 It comes to nothing as the cross is very poor. United on the front foot at present.

5 But Giggs' delivery is headed well away from danger. The atmosphere is electric. It's another corner to United...

4 Scholes picks out Nani with a class ball and the latter wins a corner.

3 Barry bends one in but Ferdinand is there to head clear.

2 Giggs breathes a huge sigh of relief as his backwards pass is sloppy and Tevez almost capitalises. Early corner for City...

Ferdinand risks four-game ban by appealing charge

Rio Ferdinand has appealed against the violent conduct charge levelled against him for his clash with Hull's Craig Fagan and will therefore be allowed to play against Manchester City in the Carling Cup. However, he risks increasing any ban if he is found guilty.

Rio Ferdinand: Made his return to the first team against Hull.
Ferdinand has decided to plead 'not guilty' to the Football Association's charge for swinging his arm at Fagan during the 4-0 win on Saturday, despite being advised not to by the club's disciplinary experts.
The decision (which had to be made by 6pm on Wednesday) means he will be able to face Roberto Mancini's City side at Old Trafford in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, but risks being handed a four-match ban later this week if the charge is proven.
The FA's disciplinary committee will review the case within 24 hours and, if they find Ferdinand guilty, are able to increase a possible three-match suspension by an extra game because of his ''frivolous'' appeal - as was the case with Sunderland's Michael Turner last month.
This would result in Ferdinand missing league games against Arsenal, Portsmouth and Aston Villa, while the fourth match of any ban would take in United's away trip to Everton next month.
A Regulatory Commission will hear the charge on Thursday 28 January.

1/27 20:00 GMT Manchester City at Manchester UnitedOdds | Stats

After a week full of trash talk and controversy, the Carling Cup semifinal second leg could not come fast enough. Manchester United hosts city rivals Manchester City Wednesday evening at Old Trafford. There are certainly not a lack of storylines for this one. The Gary Neville – Carlos Tevez middle finger saga, Tevez sticking it to his old club, Robinho about to be loaned. The list goes on… Just make sure you tune into this one folks. I have a feeling you won’t want to miss it.

Manchester City:

The Citizens, under new boss Roberto Mancini, have been quite exceptional winning all their matches other than their recent 2-0 falter to Everton last weekend at Goodison Park. They probably owe a majority, if not all, of the credit that is due to former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez who has been extraordinary in picking up the goal scoring slack as Emmanuel Adebayor attended to his Togolese National Team duties for the African Nations Cup. Tevez truly seems to show up when City needs him most and as he makes his return to Old Trafford, don’t expect to see anything different. On the flip side of things, star Brazilian forward Robinho has been in the news a lot recently amidst his lack of form and especially now being linked with a loan deal to Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo or his former clubs Santos. He did however score in City’s recent 4-2 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe United so hopefully that will get the world class talent back on track. Mancini says Robinho will be available although it is uncertain whether or not he will see the pitch. In other news, Adebayor and Kolo Toure are scheduled to return from the African Nations Cup. Toure is expected to play while Adebayor will likely be on the bench as he is not yet fit from being away on compassionate leave after the attack on the Togolese Team bus in Africa. Also expected to be unavailable from injuries are Wayne Bridge, Michael Johnson, and Joleon Lescott (all knee injuries), as well as Roque Santa Cruz and newly acquired Patrice Vieira (both calf).

Manchester United:

Manchester United made big strides this week by recapturing the top spot in the Premiership table (or at least for the time being) after their 4-0 defeat of Hull City. Perhaps it’s better described as “Rooney’s 4-0 defeat” seeing as the Wonderboy scored all 4 goals but who’s counting? Anyways, they seem to be hitting stride just as they always do this time of year and they’ll get a chance to show it as they gun for their first trophy of the decade. The big stir in the past 7 days has of course been about Gary Neville’s obscene gesture that was directed towards Carlos Tevez after the Argentine scored and proceeded to give the United bench the “Shhhhh” signal. I don’t know about you guys but I’m pretty sure Gary Neville is like 60 years old and I’m definitely sure he was sitting on the bench so I’m not sure what the hell he’s running his mouth for but whatever. At least it gives us something fun to talk about. It has certainly added to the storyline and given Sir Alex an extra barrage of questions to answer so for that Gary, I thank you. The good news for Fergie, however, is that he is heading into Wednesday’s showdown with what appears to be a full and healthy lineup. The only question mark is with Rio Ferdinand who featured for his first time in three months against Hull City only to receive a red card and a violent charge from the FA after clashing with Craig Fagan. Other than, full green light for the Red Devils.

Match Facts:

- Manchester United are the defending Carling Cup champions (sorry, forgot to mention that..)

- Manchester City has only lost 2 of their previous 21 matches in all competitions

- Sir Alex Ferguson has advanced to the League Cup finals 6 out of 7 semifinal appearances

Prediction:

After last week’s Tevez-Neville dispute, the FA is anticipating a rowdy crowd and has called for extra police assistance in anticipation of any fan related issues. Not that Old Trafford won’t be rocking already but this is evidence that it’s going to be a special night. This certainly does not play to City’s advantage. They are up 2-1 heading into the 2-legged match so a 1-0 defeat would be the end of them on away goals. With all this buzz surrounding the match, I just think United at home will be too much for the Citizens to handle. But with Tevez the Bulldog playing like he is, anything is possible.

Pick:

Manchester United 2 – 1 Manchester City
