Russia 4 - 1 Czech Republic

Russia went top of Group A in Euro 2012 as Alan Dzagoev's double helped them to an impressive victory over the Czech Republic at the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw.

MATCH SUMMARY

Man of the Match: Alan Dzagoev. The golden boy of Russian football, who has been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid, scored a brace to make his mark on the Euros. His constant movement in the final third of the pitch meant he was always open to receive or provide a pass and his finishing was clinical.

Russia verdict: The scoreline does not flatter Russia, who apart from a slight wobble when the Czechs pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, dominated the match in Wroclaw. Andrei Arshavin was pivotal for the Russians, linking particularly well with Zenit team-mate Dzagoev. However, they did needlessly allow the Czechs to pose a threat for brief periods in both halves, so complacency could be an issue.

Czech Republic verdict: Showed a lack of ideas going forward until too late. Vaclav Pilar sparkled occasionally with a well taken goal but seasoned performers such as Tomas Rosicky and Milan Baros looked old, rather than experienced. The lack of a cutting edge is particularly troublesome given that they can't defend either.

Could do better: Alexander Kerzhakov. The Zenit St Petersburg striker was fed a host of chances by his team-mates, only to waste every single one. He becomes the first striker in European Championship history to have 7 shots off target in a single game. He was hauled off after 74 minutes. His replacement, Roman Pavlyuchenko, set up Alan Dzagoev then scored Russia's fourth goal himself.

Stat attack: Russia's Alan Dzagoev, 21, is the second youngest player to score a brace at the Euros. England striker Wayne Rooney did it when he was 18-years-old.

The Football Association has announced that Jermain Defoe has returned to England following the death of his father.
Defoe, 29, has flown back to his home nation from Poland, but no replacement will be called upon by England manager Roy Hodgson.
The FA confirmed in a statement the striker will link back up with his team-mates in "due course", with the Three Lions kicking off their Euro 2012 campaign on Monday against France.
The statement read: "England striker Jermain Defoe has returned home to England this morning following the passing of his father overnight.

Karim Benzema celebrates with Franck Ribery

Karim Benzema scored twice as France completed their preparations for Euro 2012 with a convincing win over Estonia.

Les Bleus took the lead through Franck Ribery before Benzema struck either side of half-time to put them firmly in the driving seat.

Substitute Jeremy Menez then wrapped up the victory in stoppage time to cap a commanding performance in Le Mans.

France will fly out to Ukraine tomorrow before opening their European campaign against England on Monday.

Manchester United confirm Kagawa deal

Manchester United have confirmed they have "agreed terms" for the transfer of Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund midfielder Kagawa, 23, will join United this summer for a fee reportedly in the region of £16 million, subject to a medical and work permit.

It was reported at the end of May that the Red Devils were closing in on the capture of the Japan international after he was scouted by Sir Alex Ferguson.

A statement on United's official website read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with both Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to the Club.

Chelsea confirm Hazard agreement

Chelsea have officially confirmed that they have agreed the signing of Eden Hazard from Lille.

Belgium international Hazard, 21, had said last week on his Twitter account that he had decided to join Chelsea but there had been no announcement from the clubs.

Chelsea have now confirmed that they have agreed a fee, reported to be £32 million, and the player has accepted a contract and passed a medical. He will join up with the Blues for pre-season training.

Hazard told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to finally arrive here. It's a wonderful club and I can't wait to get started."

Given excelled on his return from a knee injury before making a half-time exit, while O'Shea was given the full 90 minutes to prepare him for Sunday's opening Group C fixture against Croatia in Poznan.

With Croatia boss Slaven Bilic among the crowd, Ireland once again demonstrated the resilience which helped them qualify for the finals, although they failed to take any of the chances they created to win the game.

A team of United legends were beaten 3-2 by their Real Madrid counterparts in the Corazon Classic Match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The charity meeting, which benefited Real's Foundation academies in Africa, pitted famous names from the pasts of both clubs against one another, and the game began in entertaining fashion as Fernando Morientes put the hosts into the lead after seven minutes, only for Lee Sharpe to fire the Reds back on level terms within two minutes.

Premier League duo Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernandez led Mexico to a friendly win over Brazil at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Tottenham forward Dos Santos opened the scoring in the 21st minute following a good move and he then won the penalty that allowed Manchester United striker Hernandez to double the lead 10 minutes later.

Mexico's victory means they completed their United States tour with three wins having beaten Wales 2-0 and Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-1.

England lose defender Cahill to broken jaw

England have suffered another injury blow after Gary Cahill was forced to withdraw from their UEFA EURO 2012 squad because of a fractured jaw.

The 26-year-old, who recently won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea FC, sustained the injury when colliding with England goalkeeper Joe Hart during last night's 1-0 friendly victory against Belgium at Wembley.
