GIGGS STILL HAS DESIRE

PictureRyan Giggs - still determined.
GIGGS STILL HAS DESIREBy Martyn Ziegler, Chief Reporter, Press Association Sport

The strength of Ryan Giggs' enduring hunger for footballing success was underlined during the ceremony that saw him acclaimed as the BBC's sports personality of the year.

For while the awards ceremony was building up to its climax, inside his mind Giggs was still brooding over Manchester United's home defeat by Aston Villa little more than 24 hours beforehand.

It is that gnawing pain that provides the 36-year-old Welshman with the conviction he still has plenty to offer the club he has serve for 20 years - and indeed talks will start soon on a new contract for next season.

Giggs said: "I'm hungrier for the game than I've ever been. I was sat there taking everything in during the ceremony and still thinking about the game the night before. It still hurts that we got beaten.

"If defeats are still hurting you then it shows you have still got that desire to carry on, and that's certainly the case at the moment.

"I'm probably playing the best I have ever played at the moment and enjoying it more than ever before.

"As long as I'm enjoying it and getting picked and the desire is still there I'll carry on."

Giggs said he would not contemplate having a swansong at a different club and does not foresee any problems with the contract negotiations.

"I might have to put this trophy on the table - if I'm struggling!" he joked.

"It has been the same thing over the last two or three years at this time of year - it has been quite relaxed and no problem and hopefully that will be the case again.

"It's nice to be wanted and they know I don't want to go anywhere else, I want to end my career at United."

Giggs' success in beating Formula One champion Jenson Button and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis to the BBC award showed he has a special place in the affections of many football fans, whichever club they support, and he looks to be following in the footsteps of another player who is synonymous with United, Sir Bobby Charlton.

"Bobby is the role model for all players who come through at United because not only did he do everything, it was the manner in which he did it," said Giggs.

"I was fortunate enough to break his appearances record and I have known him since I was 13 or 14, you watch people and I've seen the way he conducts himself.

"When he travels away with us he gets more autograph hunters than some of the players so you know you are in the presence of a proper legend.

"People either love or hate United but opposition fans seem not to dislike me too much - you do get people coming up and saying they admire you as a player and that's always nice."

Giggs also paid tribute to the role manager Sir Alex Ferguson - who will take charge of his 900th league game for United when Wolves visit tomorrow night - has played in prolonging his longevity.

"It's helped me because the manager has known me from such a young age and that if I have had a couple of bad games he knows I'm going to come around and start playing well again.

"If a new manager comes in, then you never know - you can lose a bit of form and they think you are finished.

"I've been very lucky to have not just one manager but such a great manager.

"I gave him a mention in my speech so he should be happy!"

Giggs limped out of the 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa with a hamstring problem and does not think he will be risked for the Premier League encounter with Wolves.

"It's not too bad but I doubt it," he said.

Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen will hope to be involved for United, who have already beaten Wolves in the Carling Cup this season and will not want to waste a second chance to draw level on points with leaders Chelsea.

Manchester United v Wolverhampton Wanderers : Giggs doubt for Wolves test

Manchester United Wolverhampton Wanderers

Ryan Giggs is doubtful for Manchester United's Barclays Premier League clash with Wolves.
Giggs was forced out of Saturday's surprise home defeat to Aston Villa with a hamstring injury and, given the 36-year-old's past problems, it seems unlikely he will be risked by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen will hope to be involved for the Red Devils, who have already beaten Wolves in the Carling Cup this season and will not want to waste a second chance to draw level on points with leaders Chelsea.
The strength of Giggs' enduring hunger for footballing success was underlined during the ceremony that saw him acclaimed as the BBC's sports personality of the year.

"I'm probably playing the best I have ever played at the moment and enjoying it more than ever before.
"As long as I'm enjoying it and getting picked and the desire is still there I'll carry on.''
Giggs said he would not contemplate having a swansong at a different club and does not foresee any problems with the contract negotiations.
"I might have to put this trophy on the table - if I'm struggling!'' he joked.

"It's nice to be wanted and they know I don't want to go anywhere else, I want to end my career at United.''
Wolves' versatile right-back Kevin Foley has been put on alert to make his first start for more than two months.
Foley, whose season has been ruined by knee problems, is set to be drafted in on the right hand side of midfield.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has a hole to fill there after David Edwards was ruled out for up to 10 weeks with the ankle ligament damage he suffered against Tottenham last weekend.
Former Sunderland midfielder Greg Halford is also in contention to replace Edwards, but Foley looks set to make only his fourth start of the season.
McCarthy, who is also still without long-term injury victims Michael Kightly, Andy Keogh and David Jones, plans to make further changes to his side following the effort his players put in during the 1-0 win at Tottenham.
And McCarthy expects Manchester United to be "rubbing their hands with glee'' at the prospect of facing his side.
With United having suffered a surprise home defeat at the hands of Villa at the weekend, McCarthy is fully braced to be facing a huge backlash from Ferguson's title-chasing side.
Wolves will head to Old Trafford on a massive high having climbed out of the relegation zone with a shock success of their own at Tottenham on Saturday.
But he knows just what kind of test his side will face as they go in search of what would be a piece of club history - a third successive Premier League win.
McCarthy, who has lost Wales midfielder Dave Edwards for up to 10 weeks after he suffered an ankle injury at White Hart Lane, said: "They must be rubbing their hands together to be playing Wolves at home.
"They must be thinking 'Wolves are coming and we have just been beaten by Villa... If ever there is a chance to get yourself back on track it is to slap these insolent little so and sos coming up from the Black Country and we are going to give them the biggest doing they have ever had'.
"I would be thinking that if I was a Manchester United player.
"I would be rubbing my hands with glee that we were coming up.
"Go and have a look at the bookmakers and see what they are saying. They are not stupid. There are no skint ones.
"But you know my view on that, don't you? It doesn't always work out that way.''

SEA Games: Vietnam beat Singapore 4-1 in football semi-finals

0 nhận xét

VIENTIANE : Singapore's good run in the SEA Games football tournament ended on Monday, when they were beaten 4-1 by Vietnam in the semi-finals.

Singapore had already met their target by making it to the last four.

And the Young Lions were still on a roll, when Khairul Nizam gave them the vital lead in the 27th minute.

But it was downhill from then on, as minutes later Vietnam equalised through Thanh Binh.

Vietnam took the lead just before half time, through Tien Thanh's goal.

The boys from Vietnam added two more goals in the second half for a convincing 4-1 win over Singapore. Both goals were scored by Ngoc Anh.

Singapore will now face Laos for the bronze medal match on Thursday, after the latter were defeated by Malaysia 1-3 in their semi-final match on Monday.

Manager Alex Ferguson admitted that Villa deserved to win the game though he refused to blame his players for the defeat. Ferguson will now be hoping for a perfect Christmas record as he looks to remain in touch with Chelsea as the season enters its halfway stage. United continue to be troubled with injuries to key players and while Wes Brown returned for the game against Villa, the English defender looked short of fitness. Edwin Van der Sar should be able to play on Tuesday along with Rafael, the duo recovering from their injuries.
Meanwhile Wolves coach Mick McCarthy will be hoping that his side will be able to maintain their recent return to form as long as possible and move further away from the drop zone. Wolves have now won their last two matches including a narrow 1-0 win away to Tottenham on Saturday.

Carlos Vela agrees new long-term deal at Arsenal

0 nhận xét

Carlos Vela has committed his future to Arsenal after signing a new, long-term contract at the club.
Vela, 20, is a full Mexico international and has made 38 first-team appearances for Arsenal since making his debut last season after a loan spell in Spain with Celta Vigo.

Arsene Wenger said on the club's official website: "We're delighted that Carlos Vela has signed a new long-term contract with the club. Carlos is a fantastic talent and we have already seen glimpses of this during his performances.

"Let's remember, he is still only 20 years old, so there is still a huge amount to come from this boy. We have invested a lot of time in Carlos, as we put him in Spain for two years to get some good experience. Now he's back with us, we're working hard with him every day and he is a very exciting player. We're looking forward to seeing Carlos score many goals in an Arsenal shirt for a long time to come."

Vela added: "I'm very happy to sign a new contract and I'm very excited to be spending more years with Arsenal Football Club. I just want to work hard and help this great club win trophies. I want to stay here for a long time and it's a great responsibility. I will keep working hard to show the boss and all the fans why I'm here."

Vela follows Eduardo, Sanchez Watt, Alex Song, Nicklas Bendtner, Denilson, Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott, Lukasz Fabianski, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere in committing his long-term future to Arsenal this season.
